Painted my Frame again!!

Well, everyone that lives in the snow belts realizes that every year you have to maintenance your frame. I have been doing mine now since I owned this truck. This is not just a Toyota issue, I have seen Chevy's Dodges & Fords rust out too if they are not maintained. Just part of living in northeast.

I have to get back under because in looking at some of the pictures last night I seen some spots I missed. Its not professional, But its the best I can do with out spending a ton of money. I used Rustoleum paint and a wire wheeled brush at the end of a power drill.

 

Did you go over the whole frame with the wire brush first?

 

Looks great! Did you tape off things you didn't want hit with the Rustoleum? Or did you just free hand everything?

 

There is your problem, if you use crappy paint you goign to be doing this every year....

Use the primer and paint Valspray the one that is rated for farm equipment. Rustoleum is for painting legs on your kitchen table

No, Just tried to not cover important stickers.

It says STOPS RUST right on the can....so I figured why not. I seen people up here that spent hundreds of dollars on professionally getting their undercarriage done, only to have it flake off anyways. Actaully when finished I used my left over on my wrought iron banister.

 

Got mine ziebarted when purchased, and then take in for the annual - hoist lift spray clean - and touch up which is included in the purchase price.

Nice job OP, (rustoleum is fine if you double coat) back in my younger days I'd get under there and do that. Now its enough to keep up with the other toys that the truck gets paid for.

 

I hear ya...I just turned 40...Im not sure how many more times I feel like climbing underneath and doing this.

 

Looks good. Honestly I wouldn't Trust just the Rusto, I highly recommend buying some Rustoleum Truck bed coating and spray that on top of the Rusto black. Then you probably will not ever have to do it again. The thicker coating is meant to take moderate abuse, and rocks and debris from the road shouldn't hurt it at all compared to the regular rusto. Also 40 is the new 30. lol

why don't you get the undercarriage sprayed each year?.....prob the same price as painting it every year and much less labor on your part. paint it once, then get it covered in oil. lol

Yup! Thats what I use. Stuff dries rock hard. A little pricey but will last a lot longer.

I painted some stuff 3 winters ago and they have no rust. So I can safely say that Valspray paint is pretty good with out costing a fortune.
POR-15 is excellent but still needs to be painted over. Plus its super expensive.

 

Iv used Valspray with good results as well.

POR15 only needs to be painted over if exposed to direct sunlight. So, most of the frame should be good to go without a top coat. Yes, very expensive paint.

 

Good on everyone for maintaining their trucks. Some good options here to think about. I am turning forty in February so I better get on doing this before I get too old. I think I will put a lift on my truck for easier access.

 

Hey...If theres a better way I will try it. Whats this Valspray you speak of and where do I get it? is it the valspar stuff at Lowes?

Since I got my shit clean, I will get back under and it and hit it with your stuff. I can finish my Banister too? I see you live in the Northeast as well, and you painted you stuff 3 years ago, can you snap a pic of your frame so I can see what it looks like after 3 years with Valspray?

 

this is what I use on my frame and on my cutom bumper. I think its great and it lasts forever and takes a beating.
