I brought my truck in yesterday to have the frame looked at. I got a call about 2 hours ago and they said that it failed. But since the truck is in my moms name they wouldent tell me any thing else. We shall see what happens later tonight...

Too bad, on the bright side perhaps there is a nice down payment on a newer Tacoma?

I wonder if they look at it or test it. I hope everything works out.

Let us know how it turns out. I am curious how much this is worth to Toyota.

being that its a 98...they should give your mom 150% of KBB value in excellent condition...

at one time along with that payment they were giving "victims" of the buyback some sort of loyalty certificates to use towards the purchase of a new toyota vehicle

the test is really difficult to do  they hit the frame in a couple different places with a hammer

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
They gave me +$12k for my 98 with +150K (I think) miles. It was a TRD offroad Extra cab. I had been welding my frame (automatic failure) for the past two years before the buyback came about. If you want to know what they offer, just go to kbb.com and look it up. The dealer was within a couple hundred bucks of the website quote, only because I was still driving it after the inspection. I drove an 05 Tundra SR5 Access cab off the lot a week later for $13k.

I got $14,115.00 for my 1999 TRD with 222,000 miles. You will get 1 1/2 times the kelly blue book. Go to KBB.com enter the year options miles and you will get 1 1/2 times the retail in excellent condition. Also they give you an extra $1000.00 if you get a new Tacoma. Dont forget to get a loaner that's part of the deal free loaner untill you get the check at the dealer. It takes about 3 weaks. I ended up with $14,115 + $1000.00 & a $2000.00 rebate on a 08 & the dealer took off $2,700 for a total of $19,815.00. Not to forget i used a loaner for 3 weaks. Not bad deal for a 1999 TRD that was worth 5K on a good day.:D

Have a 98 Tacoma and I love it, don't want to know if it has a frame issue. I don't want to pay the tax and registration for a new winter truck/summer hauler. How bad is the frame issue from a safety standpoint? I heard if you take it in for inspection, they can "ground" your truck.

Thats BS you should get a loaner, unless something changed since September you should get one. Call the 800 Toyota number. Also the rust is on the passenger side frame rail.

ive heard of some people having them taken from them immediately and some people who have been allowed to take them home and strip parts off of them

i think it probably depends on the amount of rust and safety of you actually driving the vehicle

I'd tell them to go screw themselves. They can't take MY vehicle unless I let them.
