I always see groups of hippie looking people riding at night, purposefully taking up entire two lanes on a two lane street, and when ppl pass them, they ride up next to the cars and either try to hit the cars with their hands or yell and gesture obscenely to them. I guess they dont have much else in their lives, i kind of pity them.

I enjoy seeing the hot lady cyclists who wear see-through spandex while riding their bicycles. I tend to watch them, and become a danger to everyone because I am watching them and not the road. Also, i am really dangerous down by the beach, where hot ass chicks ride their beach cruisers in bikinis. God forbid if you are on the road when i am rubbernecking, because everyone is in danger!

yeah I bet you would feel real good running over someone on the road with your truck or car because they made you slow down and pay attention for a few blocks. Boy what a great feeling knowing some family now has no father, mother, son or daugther coming home because someone could not slow down and go around them. It's not the ones that act crazy on the bikes that get hurt its the ones doing the right thing on the road that get hurt or killed because the driver is mad because the idoit acting crazy that just cut him off. No they should not be in the street but some streets have no shoulder and sometimes its the only way to get where they are going.
When I have to jump on the hood of a car making a right turn on a red light to keep from being run over and I have a green light WHO is wrong. And they want to get mad at me for jumping on the car. If I run a red light on my bike and get hit it's MY fault.................................

im sorry to all the bikers that believe that they deserve an entire lane, or even half a lane because they are saving gas and the environment...there is a reason a road is so dam wide...its for cars. If somone wants to ride their bike on the road please for the love of god stay as far to the right as possible (in boise for the most part people do)

It is not a good situation when i have to go around a cyclist hogging the road and it makes me go into the other lane. If a cyclist refuses to move over there is only one way for a driver to go...into the other lane. It is much safer for a cyclist to pull off the road then for me to swerve into the other lane in front of a semi.

Thats a silly comment. What about the people who arent able to simply drive out of town to get some exercise? Dont be close minded. Plus, NJ/NY/CT isnt exactly the easiest place to find empty roads...maybe idaho is. (Actually, I'm pretty sure it is, having driven through almost all of our wondeful states.) Anyway, point being, cyclists dont enjoy riding in traffic any more than cars enjoy having them there. People need to just develop patience. I'm certain that you're destination will still be there when you get there, even if you have to wait an extra few minutes for that red light, school bus, pedestrian or cyclist.

Bike paths can be more dangerous than streets for real cyclists. We just had a case in Ohio determine the adult cyclist could not collect compensation for his injuries when a child turned directly into him on the bike path.. oncoming. The child was with an adult.

The reasoning behind the court's decision is that bike paths can be hazardous and the cyclist had to expect that when riding it. By the same token, when the bike is on the road, it is afforded the same rights and responsibilities as the car, so the cyclist could have collect from a car driver.

This thread hasn't yet presented any reasonable argument that drivers are so angry with responsible cyclist nad yet many say they cause intentional harm to same. Who is being the A**hole here?

 Or you can just wait until that semi passes you and there is nobody in the opposing lane, to pass the cyclist. stop feeling as though you're the only one who matters. Thats my job! ;)

There are only two ways for me get to work a two lane(1mile)without a shoulder or a four lane with curbs and no sidewalk (2 miles). The two lane has a speed limit of 30 mph and I can do 20 to 25 mph without drafting on a 18 wheeler. If can get behind one of the trucks at the stop sign I can do 30-35 mph. This section of road is why I stopped riding to work.

I ride the road a few times a week and once in a while I do break a few traffic laws, but for the most I do try to ride safely. I have been cut off, and hit by people driving by in cars and trucks, not a whole lot I can do. I do try to be courteous to all. I do know there are a few cyclist that think they own the road, and give us all a bad reputation.

Foglights are for fog, not oncoming traffic!
If I point, it's not to intimidate.
If you attempt to hit me with your vehicle, that's assault...and it will be dealt with.

They can and have been ticketed. I've seen a cyclist get nailed by the cops for blowing through a red light.

Cyclists are bound by the same rules as drivers and are able to receive the same tickets as drivers.

However, have fun finding a LEO willing to put up with the rammifications from it...

Here in Seattle our Mayor (Mike McGinn or Mayor McSchwinn) is a very bike friendly anti car guy...

you mad you dont get that much attention? get over it

this is ridiculously true haha http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-4OaQ9j7kE
someone posted it in the funny vid thread or something but none the less applies to common sense

this is also true that cars will win in a collision, but if there is a law suit bikers will most likely win, and the whole not riding in town idea, that goes both way for cars and cyclist, why dont drivers take the back roads?

and on the topic of back roads, it is safer for cars on back roads then cyclists. at least a few times a year cyclist get attacked by animals on the back roads in my home town, and bikers always get hit on the back roads weekly because of people speeding. But that being said back roads are also very fun to ride on and it is a good break from the city

one again I will say this "you do realize that this is America" we like going 50mph in a 25 school zone to save 10 seconds :D:D:D:burnrubber:

its not like i am going to get road rage that i have to take 15 seconds out of my commute, but in all practicality doesent it just make more sense for the single cyclist to just move over then for a driver to slow to a crawl in the road, holding up cars behind, waiting for a line of cars to go by in the opposite direction.

You know they say the best tippers are people who used to wait tables themselves, because they know what kinds of shit waiters have to put up with. It's sort of the same here. I have never had a problem with a cyclist because I used to be a cyclist. And I know the shit they deal with ... getting cut off, getting sideswiped, getting things thrown at them ... bottles, cans, food, hot coffee, piss (yes piss).

And because I was one of them, I understand why they ride two or three abreast even if it means they're in the lane - wider profile, more visibility. And why they roll through stops and lights - they're clipped into pedals that aren't always easy to get out of, they don't want to tighten up, and similar to why motorcycles weave between lanes of traffic, sometimes stopping is a greater risk (of being rear ended / crushed). Cyclists will often look for the safest opportunity to pass through an intersection, and sometimes that is before the light turns green. Illegal? Yes. Safer? Often, for the cyclist.

But the most important thing of all - if a cyclist hits your truck, you get scratched. If your truck hits a cyclist, they're seriously injured or dead. On that alone, they deserve a wide berth. If you can't pass because of oncoming traffic, then WAIT until that traffic clears, and then go around. Remember .. the cyclist is NOT at fault just because you're in a rush.

Yes there are dicks. Yes there are daredevils. I'm not defending rudeness on either side. But sometimes what appears rude to the motorist actually is the cyclist just trying to be seen and be safe. If you've been biking long enough, chances are you have at least one friend who was seriously maimed, or is paralyzed or dead. And you want to make damn sure the next one isn't you.

When the Ironman comes to town, and hundreds of cyclists take to the streets, traffic gets ridiculous.
They'll take over traffic, cut through intersections, ride in the middle of the road...
Most of them are fine and respectful. But there's always that group that'll flip you off for trying to pass them.
(Always just wanted to stick a bamboo pole out the passenger window and give a few a push.)

I've been trying to figure out your post for a bit and don't quite get it. What qualifies someone as a "real" cyclist and why are the bike lanes more dangerous for them vs. anyone else on a bicycle?
