wtf how do I get the steering rack off?!

    I'm tying to replace my rack and pinion bushings and I got all the bolts out but how the hell do I get the rack off to replace the bushings? I can only move the rack like a quarter inch or more back and forth but I been shaking the hell out of it and pulling but it just sits back to where it was. Am I missing something or whats up? All the 'how to's" i followed just said to simply remove it.

    Damn I had to call it quits temporarily...have to put the bolts back in and go get my muffler welded in. I read somewhere to have someone turn the wheel back and forth while I pull on the rack to get it off the mounts. Ill give that a shot when I get back.

    You have the front end jacked up right? If you don't, do that first so the wheels are hanging loose. It takes the pressure off the rack.

    Damnit you serious? I had another thread on here asking if jacking the truck up necessary and the answer i got was "no". Thanks man I need to find some taller jack stands now and my job should be a lot easier.

    You took it loose from the steering wheel right? if you take teh rack off you need to lock the steering wheel in one position [i did it with a bungee] and take the connection loose above the subframe, but be sure to mark it with some whiteout to get it lined back up in the same spot again and the whole rack should just fall out, it took a little moving around to get mine out but its do-able. I also had mie on a lift so that may have made it a bit easier. Good luck with it

    Understood, but if he is saying that it will only move 1/4 then there is something he isnt seing that is holding him up cause with the mounts un bolted you should have pently of room to put the new bushings in.

    Tool box, Bedliner, Not too much yet as I bought it 4/28.
    I tried that but the smell was rather offensive. I found the best way is to shoot them out. My .45 was a little to big and damaged some metal, but the 9mm wouldn't quite get it done. The .40 works rather well but you gotta be careful as it's easy to overpenetrate and hole the axle/brake disk/caliper/wheel/tire assembly, and the snappy recoil means you tend to bust your knuckles off the exhaust or frame, so I'd use gloves.

    While i realize you're just being a smart ass, you couldn't even get to the center bushing with a blowtorch without first moving the rack towards the rear of the truck about 3 inches. OP is not having issues removing the bushings. He's having issues getting to the bushings. ;)

    Remind me to never have you work on my truck. :p
