Had my shit jacked (see other thread) looking at some Nav head units with detachable face so I am wondering does it stop or lower chances of break ins

I can't answer definitively but I just purchased a JVC unit for that reason. I'm figuring that if they don't have the controls the rest isn't very useful to them. Of course that’s if your diligent to remove the faceplate every time you leave the truck. Anything I can do to discourage the lower life forms from affecting my life, I will do.

Don't let em hear or see it. Even if the face is just in your console I think it lowers the break in percent. Also a good alarm helps...

I didn't think they even made detachable face plates anymore.this is my main reason for not wanting a new radio.i can't afford to drop big money on a radio for a shithead to steal it.I can't tint my windows to hide it either

Get a 2 way alarm from Viper or Clifford. As a police officer I have done dozens of buglaries of motor vehicles and seen countless headunits stolen. I have never seen someone break into a car with a 2 way Viper or Clifford alarm.

im sure it lowers the percentage, but i had a detachable double din pioneer and it still got jacked. dumbasses! i just ended up selling my faceplate later on down the road which i'm sure cost more. but either way, it didn't stop them

I hate to say it but if they want it bad enough they are going to get it. I can't believe someone hasn't come out with a faceplate that retracts into the unit and it can't be used without a code.

Just a bunch of old crap
Kenwood Excelon units have had the revolving faceplate feature for years, and they required a pin (which you could program) if the power was ever disconnected. No pin, no use of the stereo without a factory reset. I think this was only available in the single-din units, though. I owned 2 of these and they were the only stereos that were not stolen out of my cars (I've endured 6 break-ins). But, I have good insurance and always end up WAY better after my claims, usually with upgraded systems all around. The more I get broken into, the better off I end up :D

Shows motorized faceplate rotated facing inwards when ignition is turned to off (not my car, btw):

Update: looks like Kenwood stopped making decks with the D-Mask feature. I loved it in mine and never had a mechanical issue with either deck even after 3 years of use.

I had those kenwood d-mask. Yeah kenwood stopped making them cause the ribbon would get cut from normal wear and tear. I had 2 of them. One was a manual operated d-mask which got stolen. I still have the face plate to this day. Funny thing was the thieves should of looked under the seat and they would of found the face. After insurance covered my stereo, i got the motorized d mask which quit working on me after 2 years. I replaced the ribbon which cost me $30 on ebay and i did the install myself. After that the radio still works awesome.

I say install one of these. Cheaper and probably more effective.
