Best way to increase MPG for under $200

They found the best was the mesh tailgate. It restricted airflow enough to create the pocket but also saved some weight. Something like one of these:

It only improved it by 5% though. So about 1 mpg if you're getting 20mpg.

 

Not to be a smart ass but ..... keep it under 2000 rpms .... it works wonders.

This advice comes from a 54 year old who has gotten wiser in his old age.

I have said this to everyone. But few people can consistently practice this MOST gas saving tip.

The right foot has the greatest influence on mileage. I start slowly and maintain a steady speed.

This superceeds all gadgets and gizmos to save gas.

 

How much would a new foot cost Mine is working toooo well.

 

During my normal weekly driving to and from work I have been getting around 16.5-7mpg no matter what I try to do. On a trip I just took with 400+ pounds in the bed and driving faster than highway speeds 90% of the way I got 16.4mpg, so I just don't care anymore. I think I need to shop around for a new foot, mine seems a little heavy.

 

^You aren't too far off what I get locally, though. I don't drive like a grandpa but I only drive 5 miles to work so I don't gun it very often and I get about 18mpg, give or take a few tenths. Highway, I've gotten 23mpg unloaded, 22mpg loaded with about 500lbs on a 570 mile trip up and back to NJ.

 

Gas is cheap now, we all set.

 

Now we'll just sit and wait for a lemming to come along and spout of about how gas prices will skyrocket again, blah blah blah. The media has mind control down to a science.

 

As of last night prices have gone up 10 cents since the weekend in Rhode Island

It's a price spike due to the Gaza situation. Once that is resolved, prices will head down.

Right now, oil is down $3.19 for the day thus far.

 

Gas prices around here jumped 24 cents in a week or so....A few stations I go by went from $1.65 to $1.89 last week, and they HAD been down to $1.50-ish range I think. I can still find $1.65 here and there though.

 

Don't worry, Oils already down more than five dollars since yesterday...

 

Don't know if it's my imagination.... but I'm in the bad habit of trying to cram as much gas into the tank as I can. For my last couple fill-ups I've decided to stop when the pump stops, and I seem to be getting better mileage.

 

I've always read that it's better to have the tailgate there to maintain the air vortex in an empty bed. I personally have never done any tests of the tailgate theory though.

Also, I don't know if it's true or not, but I've read many times before that driving a whole lot at high speeds with the tailgate down can cause the bed to warp over time.

 

I've read a couple magazine articles now with that Fitch fuel catalyst thing, and they all get about the same result of a 1-1.5 mpg increase. Now to be honest both of them were diesel trucks, but they say it works for gas engines as well. I agree your best fuel saving device is your right foot tho!

 

The gas station across the street from where I live raised it prices by 0.06 cents. But it still is pretty cheap!
