So less than a week ago i got my tires balanced and rotated, a new alignment, and a "flat repaired" AKA dismount tire to clean sticks from the bead. My tires are used and not under warranty from this shop.
Fastforward to monday i had my trucks cruise control set at 75mph and the driver side rear tire blows out. So i had to change my tire on the side of the highway with a hilift jack in the rain. 1st thing i notice is that one of the lug nuts had been stripped and looks to have been blasted back on with an impact gun:mad: So anyways i throw the tire in the bed and drive home to inspect the tire. Right across where the tire's side wall broke apart "in three places" i notice a line halfway up the sidewall im not cetain but im pretty damn sure its from the dismounting machine used in the incorrect place. Probably caused a weak spot or tear from pushing it off the rim 3/4's of the way up the sidewall.

Anyways i went to the shop and asked what they could do about it. They said there was absolutly nothing. When i asked about even the replacement lug nut because it was clearly ruined by some jackass they said sorry we put them on with torque sticks that couldnt happen. I explained that you can still crossthread it with a torque stick and demanded a replacement. In the End all i got was them to mount an extra tire that i had in my shed for free because i had been in so recently. Not even a new lug nut.
So what do you guys think about this? Did i have a resonable excuse to make them pay for the damages or not? They are 3 year old tires but i find it strange one of them blew up less than a week after it was dismounted and remounted. Not to mention the other shoddy workmanship done (lug nut).

sounds pretty reasonable to me. most shops are good about replacements even if theres a slight chance they did something wrong. the shop that installed my rims used a new airgun to run up the lugs but they left it on too long and stripped 3 lugs and studs on my front left and 2 on my front rght. replaced all my studs on the front and all lugs. sometimes you get lucky like that other times you get screwed like you got

Photos would help....If the SIDEWALL broke it would indicate a low pressure condition to me.

I'd say you should be re-imbersed for a new lug nut.

Off topic: It does take skill to set lug nuts w/ an impact gun. I've had no issues, meaning no striped out, falling off, too lose, or over-tighened lug nut complaints in my yrs of servicing. Do it even on my own personal vehicles, even my mothers car. Start them all by hand, run them in till snug, then torque them with about 1.5 sec add. impact force.

When i do it myself thats what i do. I run them down pretty much all the way.

It was a 33x10.5 bfg km1. The 3 tears were are located on the same 1/4 of the tire i dont think that is normal for a blow out. Im pretty sure i would have noticed if the driver side tire was flat before i started driving, and i can usually tell if a tire is going flat when im driving (ie unusual vibrations) I cant post pic;s because the tire shop disposed of it for me.

Do the lug yourself. It's easy to do. Ya need a hammer, some wd40 or equivilent, and a socket and breaker bar. The price to mount and balance the tire was about what it is to replace the lug. I would suggest inspecting all your lugs to be safe. I worked as a tire changer in a shop and frozen lugs are common. Usually had a box full and would replace em' for free cuz it was so easy, but the shop you went to sounded like they were a bunch of ass hat wearin' bitches. Don't go back there again, lesson learned.

IV replaced studs before and even dismounted and mounted tires in my back yard ( love that vaccum line trick). I can't balance or do an alignemnt myself having the shop do the whole shabang for $80 seemed like a steal of a deal. I guess you get what you pay for.

The tire was disposed of so i cant really show you guys a pic. However microsoft paint is the best i can do
Green represents the three tear flaps red represents the strange tear line across the sidewall.

Next time have the tire shop send the tire to the manufacturer and request they start a tire failure claim for you. The manufacturer will contact you for more info while they inspect the tire for the reason it failed...you provide all the info then they will tell you the claim is denied  ok well they may admit to a manufacturing defect, but not likely. But at least you would feel better about it right? No, then call the tire company and complain and they may make a deal with you. Or in your specific case they may have agreed that the tire shop screwed up the tire, but probably not.

Over this past month we had a BFG KM2 Mud Terrain blow out, this tire had 21K miles on it. Discount Tire sent the tire to Michelin/BFG and started a claim for us. We submitted all the info they requested, the truck was damaged from the blow out, they denied the claim stating the failure was caused 'due to significant impact with an unknown object' blah blah..this truck is used for towing, not a daily driver and not an off road rig etc so anyway we know this tire never experienced an impact. My bf called and spoke with the claim person and he compromised and paid for the 4 replacement Nitto tires we had to purchase since we were traveling during the blow out and couldn't get a 33" KM2 and had to buy 4 tires to continue our trip.
Just another bit of info a friend who has the same truck (not Tacoma) has had 3 blow outs in 6 months with the KM2's, mentioned this to BFG and they swear there is no known defect on their mud tires.
