1 ton floor jack enough for front suspension change?

I want to put in my new struts this weekend but i dont have a floor jack. None of my friends have one at the moment either. I found a place that rents 1 ton jacks but i read that the curb weight of a 4x4 taco is around 3800. But since im only doing the front suspension, i only need to lift one front tire off the ground at a time. Would a 1 ton jack suffice?

 

what is wrong with your supplied jack? I dont see it being an issue though, since you only need to lift enough to get the wheel off. make sure you use a jack stand while working.

Your not jacking up the whole weight of the truck.

 

Sears sells a jack and jack stand combo for cheap. ALWAYS!!!!!! use jack stands. Don't trust a hydraulic jack to hold. If the seal blows while you're under the truck. Geuss who gets all effed up and will be lucky to get a ride to the hospital. If ya do anything, use jack stands regardless. Compared to what could happen to you, they are cheap.

 

Don't get under the truck while it's only supported by the jack. 1 ton is on the lower end of what you'd want but it'll probably work. x2 on just using the emergency jack until you get it up on a stand.

 

ya? I never thought about using an emergency jack and then transferring to a jack stand. I always just used hydrolic jacks when i had them. Maybe ill just try to find a jack stand and use my OEM jack....

 

Yeah, your GVW is distributed to four wheels, but the front two are heavier. Still, no worries. One corner at a time. Well within limits. No different than chaning a flat.

Instead of a jackstand, you could use big blocks of wood (like 4x4s or 4x6s) if you have enough to make it stable and lay them like bricks (alternating courses).

 

On the trail i stick my spare tire under the truck, if i dont have jackstands.
