my nieghbor bought a 06 Tacoma 4.0 truck kinda like mine and we changed the oil on it. and it had a fram filter on it (ick). When I took the filter off no oil dained out and the filter was basically empty, it felt light. My question is did the filter's anti drainback fail? motor gets no oil pressure for the first few seconds of startup when this happens?

Fram is the worst oil filter you can buy... They are are great at marketing , but very BAD at producing a quality filter. Buy a different brand of filter and your car will love you. :)

They have a competitor for that title in the Champion E-Core line, which includes STP, AC/Delco, and Supertech.

Similar construction (no metal endplates), but the media is wrapped around a plastic cage core.
There have been a number of reports of the core collapsing and the media plugging the outlet. All Fram does is leak through the bypass and drainback.

oh god... I wouldnt even think of putting a Supertech on one of my vehicles.
Wix is the best you can get for the $ spent. $7 dollars and you get a top tier filter. I love Wix.

Interesting. My old 2.7 had 285K on it and got the "orange can of doom" since I owned it. It does pay to change the filters once in awhile.

Back to the OP's original question. I had the same thing yesterday. Granted the truck has been sitting for about a week with very little run time. Went back to the Toyota filter yesterday. But is that a concern if it's not draining anything?

Most any filter will eventually drain back.
Those with silicone parts may hold the oil in a bit longer, but if it sits long enough, any filter will drain.
Nothing is waterproof... and nothing is oil-proof.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Probably it did fail, knowing FRAM quality, that antidrainback valve is somewhere inside his engine by now...
