My wife told me for years to get my knees and elbows checked, been in pain since the early 80's. I blew it off, because I can take it, "no gain no pain" right, yeh...well now the damage is done, to young for replacements, to old for the standard treatments.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
This doctor sounds like an ass. I would get another one, preferably a woman. It sounds like he is just treating the symptoms and not the underlying problem. Did he even listen to your heart?

Exactly, your only 27. With your eating habits, lifestyle, and age it sounds more like you may have a congenital defect. Not an expert nor am I trying to scare you but something just seems fishy.

Some docs you see always assume it's 'nothing' or 'in your head'. Here - take some ibuprofen every 4 hours for 2 weeks and call me if you're not feeling better.

Sometimes they need a little poke & prodding to get what you want. Humor me - and give me a damn test even if I gotta pay for it!:D

You have to be careful with BP cause taking it over and over again will cause the readings to change if you don't wait a bit inbetween taking it. Same with standing, sitting or laying down. That can change it as much as 10 points with some people.
And while you should take it easy, I wouldn't cut the exercise completely out. Last thing you want to do to your body is throw it a curve ball of sloth. Exercise keeps your BP down by opening up all those vessels. And worry more about the second number, the diastolic. If it's high then you've got big worries. If the first one (Systolic) is high, it's not good either, but the diastolic is more detrimental to health.

Another thing. Have you been unduly stressed out about something? Work? Bills? Economy? Boyfriend not offering enough oral sex but still wants it in return?

Sounds like a douche bag. He gets paid for prescribing meds. Course he wants you to take them. Good for you for ordering the tests. Look for another doctor. This one doesn't seem to actually give a flying fuck about your health.

Not always a good thing. Alot of advances meds are brand new. No clue how they affect you in the long term. Or what other meds might conflict with what you're taking. Same thing with those meds they offer on TV that say 'Ask your doctor about Urleekirectymizluuz'. They get around certain legislations by having you asking for it, thus you just volunteered to become a fucking Guinea pig. 'Side affects may include shitting out your entire rectum, spontaneous aortic dissection, necrosis of the eyes and CSF, Grand Mal Seizures, atomic collapse of the uterine wall causing black holes and cosmic radiation and slight dryness of the mouth."

    RIP Lucy.
    She's gone but not forgotten.
My ex wife started giving me noise when I turned 45 about going to the doctor "just to make sure everything is OK". So I went to my GP. Of course the questionnaire has questions on family history. Everyone (EVERYONE) on my father's side has died of a heart attack or stroke....she there's a little history there. So my GP says she wants me to get an echo done just to make sure.

I had an echo done. Couple days later she (GP) calls me in. Tells me to sit down. Tells me my heart is enlarged, my ejection rate is far below normal, and I have leaky valves. In short I'm a walking time bomb.

She sends me to a cardiologist in town. He runs me on the treadmill, puts me in the MRI, bunch of other tests. He tells me "YOUR HEART IS PERFECT". Sends the results back to my GP.

GP calls me in and says she doesn't understand. So I get another echo done. While this guy is doing it he asks me "am I the one that did your echo the first time?". I said no, it was a woman last time. He says "good". Asked why. He says "that means I'm not the one that was so wrong the first time, your heart is fine".

All this happened over a period of a couple weeks. So for a couple weeks I was walking around thinking about what I'd do with my child, what all I wanna do before I kick off in a month or two. Thinking I'm a walking time bomb.

Get a second opinion. With something as important as this your insurance should have no problem covering it.

Oh and for the guy out there that ended up dying of a heart attack because he didn't know (the one they swapped my results with) I hope your family is suing someone!

Listen to the Doctors, 4 years ago went by to see my dad at his auto upholstery shop. He had just finished lunch and was complaining of gas pains, I made him go to the doctor under his protest, 2 weeks and a tripple bypass later my dad came home and is fine. Point is, don't guess and if you don't feel right then find out why. It could be as easy as a medication or even a change of diet. Keep it in check and take it easy on yourself, you'll be fine. Foxy, your symptoms sound just like my wife's. Her BP was always high, she was a guinea pig for all kinds of blood pressure meds, tests you name it. She has a heart mummer. Well a few years ago her doctor told her that if she didnt get it down she wouldnt see 40! I was telling the guys at work and an old Oriental friend said to drink 4 oz of red wine in the evening no more. She did and in a few months with exercise, the right change in eating habits and support from us her BP was down to normal. She also was referred to a woman who practices Body Talk and Reiki which are types of applied kinesiologies. I myself have gone through a few sessions and I can honestly say that I have seen ALL positive results by going. I really hope you get to feeling better soon. If you have a chane look up Body Talk and Reiki and see if there are any practices near you.

He is the top doc at the clinic, so he knows his stuff. He didn't give me any issue when I told him I wanted tests now. It just seems like the docs are always rushed and they dont ask enough questions to really know what is going on. I was ready for that and made him listen, I told him the basics and he immediately said meds and check up in 6 months, I told him that I'd been checking it myself and keeping track since I noticed the problem and was waiting to get in to be tested. He did listen to my heart and breathing. He did an EKG in the office when I told him I was truely not feeling right and have been concerned for 2 months. Yes I do agree he wanted to treat the symptoms without finding out the problem. If it becomes an issue when I go back I'll find a new doc.

Yes I am concerned that I may have a congenital defect, I reviewed my medical records and one notes a heart murmur 8 years ago that I was never asked about and I also had an abnormal stress test about 7 years ago that was noted as a 'possible false positive, no follow up needed'. I also noted that my BP was on the high end of normal for years as a teenager/early 20's and it was never mentioned to me. I asked my Dad about any problem I had as a child or anything in the family, he says there is nothing. Hopefully tests will figure it out.

He has always seemed like a good doc, friendly and knowledgable, just rushed. It does seem like he was just concerned with treating the symptoms and not finding the problem, I truely believe this is due to my age and history or lack of, because I was listening to this elderly couple complain to another older lady that the same doc kept sending them for all kinds of tests every 6 weeks and they didn't think the tests were necessary, she actually refused some of them in the lab. So same doc sends these elderly people with significant history to many tests without them asking and I have to ask for testing .

I'm surely going to keep insisting till I know the why and not rely on meds. I don't mind paying or the time and effort it takes. :D

Thanks much for the info and laugh :).
I'm aware that multiple readings in a short amount of time will change along with movement/positions. There was time between each set of readings they took, left then right wait then both again, then doc tried both about 10 mins later. The original reading was high which is what caused them to check the other arm then wait and try again, guess they thought I had white coat anxiety. I reviewed all the records I have and never technically had high readings, just in the 'prehypertensive' range till Nov when I started feeling badly. Sometimes both #'s were high sometimes only the systolic, but more often the diastolic was the high one, it's never been consistent.
I'm not giving up exercise, just keeping it easy like walking instead of jogging since my HR spikes to 160bpm pretty quickly and then I feel really ill and quickly exhausted. I not giving up riding my quad on the weekends either :).

I'm less stressed than I have ever been in my life. I have a nice job that pays me well and is very low key, grave shift helps with that ;) not worried about losing my job. The economy hasn't affected me much at all. My bills don't concern me as I have never lived beyond my means. The BF gives and gets in return, so no complaints there :D.

I agree, the Doc could have done better, but I have dealt with far worse docs in my past which is why I was prepared to deal with him. It seems nearly impossible to find a great doc around here, I've asked around at work, my BF asked around his work and everyone says the same. It takes about 6-8 weeks to get into any doc office out here. I actually switched to this doc last year cause I was not happy with my current doc. I'll see how it goes at follow up, I think he is on track with what I want. I'll research some other docs just in case.

I'm not a big med person anyway, so I usually don't take them unless absolutely necessary. I haven't started the meds he gave me yet either, going to wait till the tests are finished. No sense in taking them without knowing what the problem is and if they will actually help my problem.

Thanks for the story. I'm having an echo done, also a 24hr Holter monitor that records heart rate. I had an EKG in the office, just had urine, stool and blood sent in. I'll see how these come back, maybe then ask for a stress test and other tests if these don't figure it out. I have great insurance, so no problems with that and I'd pay if I have to.

Thanks. My grandfather had 6 bypass done about 13 years ago when he was 75yrs old, he is still living and doing great even though the docs gave him 10 years max. My grandmother is 86 and doing just fine. My Dad is 58 years old and had mild high BP when he was a smoker, but is now down to normal. My mothers side is all in Germany, so their history is unknown.
My other grandfather (not blood related) died of a sudden heart attack at 63 just after he retired, and he was being treated for high cholestrol and high BP, but he was a smoker and had a poor diet. One night he said he wasn't feeling well and couldn't sleep, he was found dead in his recliner then next morning.

Ben, I'm not surprise you say that. I have been told I'm wise beyond my years for many years and fairly often, I take it as a nice compliment.

Thanks. Was the murmur the cause of her high BP? Were all her tests normal? Glad she got hers under control! I am far more interested in natural and holistic approaches to health than meds and docs. I have researched what foods to eat and avoid and any vitamins/minerals/herbs that help. I use to rely on garlic to get me through flu season and it always worked. I also use to take cayenne to help with circulation after I had surgery on both my legs. I'm researching what other herbs are good for cardiovasular health. My friend goes to a holistic doc, I'm going to get her info from him and maybe check her out. I'm going to go research Body Talk and Reiki now. :D

After my step-dad has his heart attack, the docs put him on Omega-3 fatty acids and, of course, various other meds, and the South Beach Diet, but that all might have been for the triglycerides and cholesterol. Might be something to research though. His diet sucked previous to the heart attack though and yours doesn't. My Mom went on it with him and got some good results in weight loss and bone density which was pretty cool. Just stuff to maybe look into. :)

Not that going to the doctor is fun, but now that all of these tests are being done the DR's have a base line on you now.
I know it is alot of stress and BS to get this far, but I will tell you it is worth it.
I am glad you have good insurance, and can get everything done.
Just remember that if you need to vent "bring it on" here. Alot of people here are praying that your results whatever they are are neg.
Like I was told "we are family here".

Im gonna put my wife on for ya hope she has some good info for you.

Hello, I'm not sure how much my husband has told you about me and the blood pressure rollercoaster I've been on. I'll just give you a quick as possible history.

I developed high blood pressure in 1993 (I was 18 at the time) and pregnant. They had me on bed rest for several months prior to delivery and 1-month after delivery promising it would go away. It didn't. At 19 I wasn't too concerned about it and they couldn't seem to get it regulated so I just quit taking my meds. Some days my BP was good, some days it was terribly high. The medicine really didn't do anything but make me tired.

When I turned 28 or so is when I started not feeling so good (wasn't sure why). They decided it was because my BP was too high and tried me on several different medications with no luck at regulating my numbers. They sent me to an internist and they ran some tests. Nothing. I actually went to several more internists. After extensive blood work, Ultrasound of my kidneys, 24 hour urine test, etc. they really didn't have any answers. I went on the Dash Diet (low sodium), was o.k. on the weight, didn't smoke, was drinking red wine every night and excercised. I was taking 3 RX's for my BP and they just couldn't get it under control. They pretty much told me I'd probably have a stroke by the time I was 50. This was over the course of several years. I just accepted that I wasn't going to live to be old. They didn't have any answers.

I developed the murmur around the time I was 28. I had surgery to have the endometriosis cleaned up, was taking my meds, and thankfully found a specialist that isn't a pill pusher and determined that my thyroid was off (which can give you a murmur). I had all the symptoms of low thyroid but my blood work was always fine. This doctor actually operates on a different and more extensive blood work scale and got me on a natural, non-synthethic thyroid medicine (which the FDA is trying to get off the market because it's really cheap and it works). I have felt great ever since. My BP was still high though.

Okay, so after all this my OB doctor tells me unless I have a death wish, no more kids. I had my tubes tied and a Novasure Endometrial Ablation (stops your period - only a 90 second surgery). My heart stopped twice during surgery due to I have a very sensitive Vegas vein or nerve that happens to be attached to my uterus. If I squat down too long, I'll pass out.

At 31 years old I still had high BP. I hurt my back and stumbled upon a woman that is a Rolfer, does Reiki and Body Talk. She fixed my back and then told me she could fix my BP. I laughed. She worked on me for 30 minutes. Two or three months later, I was off all my meds and at 34 am still doing fine.

Body Talk is strange and I've known very few people that said it really didn't help. I call her my witch doctor. They tap on different points of your body. She knew that someone had died while I was pregnant (my uncle that lived next door shot himself). I told her that my dad had also disowned me around that same time. My high blood pressure started at the same time these events occurred. I rarely cry but left her office sobbing uncontrollably all the way home (which is about 30 miles).

My numbers were a little elevated this past year and I went back to her and they are where they should be again. If you have any more questions, just let me know. I probably gave you more information than you ever wanted to know. Good Luck!

They are testing my cholesterol and triglycerides. I'm looking into some diet changes either way, I consider mine pretty normal, nothing too crazy healthy or crazy bad. My BF definately eats worse than me and was a smoker for over 25yrs and he is fine :).

It really hasn't been all that bad, I have a lot of patience and time. I'm just relieved that something is getting done now so I don't have a heart attack at 30 :). I know my BF is worried even though he tries not to show it, he asked who to contact if something happened to me, since I don't have much of a family.

I had a scare with cervical cancer last year from an abnormal result on my routine test, now they will continue to check for the rest of my life. I have that test in a couple weeks, so I hope it's still negative and this is not related to any of that.

You are right, the people on this forum are fantastic. Sometimes it is easy to share things with people you don't know, then you aren't worried about upsetting people close to you. It's always great to have a bigger support system and hear others thoughts and stories. Every little bit helps.
