Using an engine oil treatment?

Since Napa was having a sale on an STP Oil Treatment, I decided to give it a try. I'm at about 50,000 mi. and used it on my last oil change. Was this a good idea? Any of you do the same thing? Will it last an entire oil change interval?

 

i personaly use RESTORE oil treatmeant. it gaurentees to restore horse power and restore mpg (hench the name). its like 8.99 and i really dont think it does much.

but when i comes to oil i do stupid stuff like use mobile 1 syn with mobile 1 filter and change it every 2500 miles( it like 60 bucks every time)

 

I used to run penzoil conventional with an OEM filter for 5k mile intervals. Now I do the penzoil platinum with the OEM filter for the same interval, and Im sure I could go longer if I got the oil tested.

You really should save some money and let it go a bit longer.

OP, those additive things generally do nothing, but you didn't hurt anything adding it.

but on my next build ill provally let it go for 3k (with mobile1 syn and fitler) cuz ill be short on money cuz i want totally mod it out

synthetics can do 7k easily but I would get it tested before trying that. Amsoil can go like 25k or something crazy like that.

 

Resting easy is one thing....Wasting money is another. There are folks who go 15K on synth with 2 or 3 filter swaps during that OCI....2500 or 3K is just pissing money away man.

 

i use blackstone. have for a few years. i agree that a reputable lab like blackstone is ideal for figuring out how long to go and what to use.

OP, additives are unnecessary. so is arbitrarily changing your oil. just use good oil and a good filter, and follow either the (arbitrary) factory change interval (at a minimum) or reports from a reputable lab.

 

ya thats probally true about that oil...... oh and i think i added up my miles up wrong last change.... i thought i had drove 2450 miles so i chaged it...... looked at it the other day and when i change it the oil had 1850 miles on it

 

I don't think oil additives do shit.Snake oil.Modern oil has all the additives needed already.That's why none of the major oil companies sell additives.Not needed.

 

i will add to my previous post that in certain scenarios seafoam is a nice solution. i had an old montero that had sticky lifters. nothing worked to make them quiet - it sounded like a bunch of woodpeckers under there. so i did a seafoam cleanse and added some to the new oil and bam - never heard a peep out of them again. eventually, toward the end of the interval, i'd start to hear some on startup, but it was always near the end of the interval, so i'd simply change the oil, refresh the seafoam and bam. quiet again.

but that was a 23 year old truck with a bazillion miles on it with the ORIGINAL lifters. not a modern vehicle by any stretch.
