Question on a ZX6R

Alright guys...I've been looking for a motorcycle for a while now. I finally found one and I've got a question about it. It's a 2000 Kawasaki ZX6R with 40K miles on it. He just put new tires on it. It does have some scratches on the fairings and a couple small dents in the tank. He started out askin $3300, but I've got him down to $2500 because he wants to get rid of it cuz he found another bike he wants.

The main questions are; should I worry about a bike with 40K miles on it? I know it's an 11 year old bike, so miles are to be expected, but it 40K too much? Should I have to worry about somethin goin wrong soon with that kinda mileage? And the other question is, does $2500 sound like a pretty fair price for a bike with that kinda mileage/some small damage?

This will be my first street bike. I grew up around dirt bikes and stuff, but I'm new to this scene, so any info would be helpful. Thanks guys!

The guy said it was like that when he bought it. He put one dent in the tank by trying to park it in wet grass and it fell over. The cosmetic crap doesn't bother me. I can handle scratches and stuff on it. It's the motor that worries me with 40K.

 

I've seen bikes (cruisers)with 80k miles on it. I wouldn't buy a used street bike at all.they are meant to be beat on and most are.I'd stay away from a street bike with that many miles.$1500 is all that would be worth.zx6 is a good first bike.

 

if it runs well and doesn't leak anything it's a fair price. Keep in mind that 600s are still hella fast for a first bike. Be careful. Even if you just ride it and learn for one season, you should be able to get that again for it at the end of the summer.

 

the motors are rarely why sportbikes aren't on the road anymore. those little motors are practically indestructable. They all just get wrecked.

 

I can't exactly afford a new bike right now. I probably shouldn't be buyin one anyway, but with everything I've calculated I can afford it and still be able to start building a house and stuff. I know they're basically all ridden hard and put away wet...but all I can afford is a used one unfortunately...

He says everything is fine with it aside from the cosmetic damage. And he just put new tires on it. He has someone comin to look at it tomorrow for $3000, but if he doesn't sell it I'm going to look at it sometime this week. Mainly it'll be used to drive back and forth to work, with the occasional pleasure ride. I could buy a little Suzuki GZ250 for like $1100, but I figured if I'm really gonna get one I might as well get somethin that I want and like, and that GZ250 ain't it.

I dont know what pricing should be for that bike out there, but seems a little high. I think $2k and lower is more like it. You couldn't find anything else in the area comparably priced with less miles? Im surprised if that's all that's out there.
I think The 2000 ZX6R is good bike 4 what you're lookin to do,but I think a Honda CBR 600 with that kind of mileage is a better bike to get. Everytime I spoke to a MC mechanic about Honda they were more impressed with the reliability and durability compared to other bikes(but all Jap nikes are pretty reliable). Again I would think you could find a bike in thatprice range with less mileage. But if you can get the kwak for $1500 ish I d say its a deal.

 

All the decent bikes I've seen down here are in the $3-4000 range. And that's early 2000 models. You can't even hardly find an early 2000s Kawi ninja 250 for less than $2000.

 

If it's all you can afford than do it.my feelings are i don't want to do 100-150mph on something I don't know the history of.you say you wont speed but you will.street bikes are the devil's toy. He makes you do it and you cant help. It.just bring it to a shop and have them go through the bike. Be smart when riding and always wear all your gear no matter how hot it is or how cool you think you are in shorts and a t shirt.ROAD RASH SUCKS!!!

 

I buy and sell a lot of bikes. Doesn't make me an expert but to me buying and selling is almost as much fun as riding. Here are a couple thoughts.

1. As mentioned above, the motors on these bikes are pretty much bulletproof unless it didn't get oil changes. 40k mi seems high because there are so many good used bikes out there with 5-10k mi, but it wouldn't scare me at all if I thought the bike was well maintained. I'm not saying the cosmetic stuff means the bike was ragged out and ignored but it does make me wonder if the previous owners took as good of care of it as I would prefer.

2. I think the guys thinking that you could score this for under $2k are a little off. Markets vary from place to place, but here it's hard to score anything that's not destroyed for less than $2-2.5k. Also keep in mind that prices are up because of the riding season. I think $2,500 is probably about as low as most folks will sell a complete running bike.

3. I think you're being smart getting an older used bike for a first bike. I won't get on my soapbox about the many reasons why. Definitely take the MSF course whether you've got riding experience or not.

 

I agree with the msf course.i took it years ago. The motors are bullet proof but if it has 30k miles on one wheel and only 10k on 2 id be a little worried

 

Buy a sport bike in the winter not during spring/summer. I would look elsewhere.

 

Chibb is on to something with this post. Personally, I think I would look elsewhere. I'm kinda anal about my motorcycles (track-bike and streetbike both) if something gets messed up, even cosmetic it kinda bothers me. Fairings are a pretty easy to find and aren't too difficult to fix for an owner. For around that price range, if you keep an eye out, you could probably find something lower-mileage, possibly newer and with a good service record for around $3-3500. The cosmetic neglect kinda makes me weary of that one.

 

Trust me, if the bike had routine maintenance, including oil changes, you're probably not going to have any problems! I have a 1999 Kawasaki zx6r with just over 43k and it runs flawlessly! That's with 2 wrecks under it's belt and one being at 100+ mph! The early 2000 kawasakis are the last of "heavy duty" sportbikes! Since then, sportbikes have become basically disposable if they're involved in a wreck over 10mph! As far the 2000 zx6r, kawasaki recommends adjusting the valves every 7500 miles. I'd find out if the owner has had any maintenance done to the bike. If the owner hasn't, I'd at least get the VIN, and call some local shops and find out if anything was ever done. In the 43,000 I put on my zx6r, the only thing I ever had to replace was the clutch cable and front brake pads! These bikes will last along time! We just had a 1999 zx9r in the shop about a week ago that had over 150,000! Ran great! On of the other technicians has a 1986 Kawasaki concourse with over 197,000! i have an 01 zx6e. same engine. so far it has 30k on it and runs perfect. Some bike have had issues with second gear though(not mine). thats the only problem i know of.

 

No, not the same engine at all! But still it's a kawasaki! That's another benefit of the Kawasaki sport bikes, most of their transmissions come from the factory with undercut cut gears, so there's less of a chance of wearing out the dogs, as compared to the other brands. I.e. yamaha

 

i had that EXACT bike. it was amazing. the tranny is notchy-er than any honda i have been on, but i bet it is a KAWI thing. no issues.

the head/steering bearing went out on me. when that goes, it goes slowly and you rarely notice it right away. i got it fixed right before i sold it, and WHAM! it was a handling machine. i sold it at around, shit can remember, but i was nowhere near that mileage.
