4x4 AC V6 Manual? (Really rare?)

Well I've been trying to shop around for a tacoma, and Ideally, I'd like a 4x4 Access Cab 4.0L V6 Manual trans, but it seems to be extremely rare. (At least in texas) I might end up going with the 4x4 2.7L i4 AC instead, because of price, and availability. All I can seem to find in the 4x4 AC v6 is Auto. Anyone else noticed this huge shortage?

*Note I'll be living up in Glenwood Springs, CO, so 4x4 is a must. I just hope the i4 can handle the hills decently. I really dont wanna drive an AUTO. (I love manual X_X)

I tried to get a 4x2 AC 2.7L manual black and apparently there was only 1 available on the east coast so I went with 4x4 so I didn't have to order one

 

I tried forever to get my truck in Houston. None of the dealers had it so I ended up just ordering it from Fred Haas.

Same as the one you want but double cab instead of access cab! All of them were automatics and I only want to drive a standard.

 

its ridiculous, 90% of the tacoma's i've seen on the lots in houston are 4x2 prerunners or just base models. Barely any 4x4's and barely any manual's

 

You're probably not going to like the 4x4 access cab 4-cylinder in Colorado. It's just fine in low gear offroad, and in the moderate stuff (for example driving from Glenwood up the Roaring Fork Valley will be fine). But up things like Vail Pass, because of the altitude, you'll be floored in 3rd at 45.

As for manual V6 access cabs, they're definitely available. If you're coming this way, check the Toyota dealers in Grand Junction, Colorado Springs, or Pueblo for example .. they have several of what you're looking for. Not so much in Denver or Boulder.

FWIW - Take it from one who has driven both though (and was also a manual guy for 24 years) ... I actually found the auto to be the better pairing for the access cab as, for a rather sizeable chunk of truck, the 2nd gen rear end with the 6-foot composite bed is very light, and the power of the V6 and direct drive connection of the manual made it very easy (for me at least) to break the rear end free.

I never saw it on the test drive, but once I got it out in the hills and on slippery slopes, it was a problem that plagued me like it never had before (I came from a manual 4-cyl 4runner). That's also my theory why Toyota doesn't offer manual on the DC long bed .. too easy to break the rear free from stop.

The auto makes it much easier to feather power to the wheels, keeping traction in the rear. It's a great transmission and also is used in the FJ and 4Runners. Again this is access cabs I'm talking about. Double cab short beds have more weight over the rear wheels simply by design. I think DC SB guys like the manual much more.

 

Thanks for the tips mountain. I guess I'll either try ordering the v6 manual to houston, or just go with the auto instead. It all depends on what kind of deal I can get. I hate the idea of feeling limited in Colorado. That's the whole reason I'm getting a Tacoma.

 

Well if you don't want to feel limited, then yeah ... definitely stick with the V6. And not totally sure why you want to go manual (maybe you just like rowing through gears) but the auto really is a good tranny. Very well received offroad. Truth be told, the more and more I get offroad with it, the more I fall in love with it. Maybe I'm just an old fart who now appreciates the benefits of technology a little more, but I find the V6 access cab and auto to be a really good combo in Colorado.

And if you're under 6 feet, you'll love the access cab, because you can stretch out and sleep in the bed. I dropped a shell on mine, and put in a Bed Rug mat and it's awesome for sleeping. Nice to not always have to pitch a tent, especially if the weather turns wicked. But you gotta camp out in Colorado!

And if you can, go TRD Off Road - the e-locker and especially the A-TRAC (which I use much more than the locker) are great to have in dicey situations. And as part of your deal, get the dealer to swap out the BFG Rugged Trails for some better tires (the Rugged Trails suck and Colorado's trails will chew them up). Duratracs or BFG AT KO's are both popular on these trucks, and both a hell of a lot better than the stock rubber. My dealer didn't carry Duratracs, but I was able to get them to put on some BFG AT KO's for the price of mount & balance only.

So Glenwood eh? What are you going to do out there? (Beautiful place but getting really pricey)

 

Lol I just like the added activity while driving I guess. Driving Auto just seems like autopilot sometimes, but I'll probably just go with the AUTO v6 now. I just had a dealer tell me that they don't "make" the Manual V6 tacoma, heh. (More like the Texas distributors don't sell it.) I'm sure I'll get used to driving an Auto again, though.

I stand at about 5' 9", so that's good to hear. It'l be a welcome change from my tiny 96' convertible mustang. There was no room in that thing!

Okay, I made a note about the tires. Well I'm heading up to Glenwood to start my job with the NRCS (USDA). I just graduated from college in south texas with my BS in Civil Enineering. I started interning up in CO 3 years ago, and I fell in love with it. It was hard finding decent rent in glenwood, but I think I landed an apt. for 825/mo. Which part of CO do you live in?

The 5 speed manual V6 is rare. 6 speed is common. I would get the 5 speed.

I had to wait out as well. Wanted a DC OR manual and was in between the 09-10 model years. Dealers only wanted to sell me what was on the lot. I declined. Finally a silver one showed up and I scooped it up the day after it got dropped off on the delivery truck

Must be a demand thing. Houston probably doesn't have a lot of demand for 4x4s with lack of snow. But if you go up north it'll be just the opposite. And same here for no manuals on the lots. People around here want convenience. Especially with the horrible traffic where I live.

The 5 speed is only for the 2.7l, the 6 speed is for the 4.0l.

 

My truck is a 6 speed AC. Don't think they are really rare... but manual vehicles as a whole seem to be getting phased out.

 

The dealers I went to (one in Houston and one in Tyler) said they searched a 5 state area and only came up with two 4x4, V6, manual, access cabs. Guess I'm looking for the same truck you are.
