In Dash Navigation Brand New Taco Owner- Questions

Hey Team- I'm a new Taco owner. Bought 5 hours in. Feels good. Thanks for letting me on the team. TRD Off Road, Magnetic Gray, 4 x 4.

I have a big week planned.

Leather this week- best shop in town uses Roadwire package. I won't install myself and its $995 installed and $575 extra if I want heated and cooled seats in both front seats. I think that is generally fair. Will do one main color.

Big question is on navigtion. Seems like Kenwood, Pioneer, and Clarion are the leaders at my local shops. Big questions before I pull the trigger:

How is the bluetooth in these systems? In previous ones I've had some are good- some are hard to hear or others cant hear you. Any info here on a specific model is great.

I know Garmin is on the Kenwood's but how are the others? Is thetinterface bad on the other nav systems or just Garmin is so easy to all of us thats why people like?

Has it been hard to hook up the rear camera to the back up camera? Local shop mentioned there wasn't a harness yet and they would rather not do it till a harness is made. Has anyone added a front camera also? I had an FX with all around cameras and man it was nice.

Anything in ease of use from one system or the other that you all like? I'm thinking I could get one installed for about $900 without Satellite and 1200 with XM right now.

Pioneer Avic Z120BT Is what I installed The bluetooth works excellent. have no issues there and you can mount the mic in virtually anyplace in the cab, they give you 100ft of cabling. I dont have a back up camera but the harness that is included looks very straight forward for connecting the back up cam.

Im a pioneer guy they just make quality products.

OP, I recently installed the

$65 NX501 Enhanced OBD II Auto Code Reader, Car Diagnostic Scan Tool Vehicle Check Engine Light Analyzer for All OBDII Vehicles After 1996

NX501 and it's BT has been fantastic! I'm on conf calls at 75 MPH and everyone hears me just fine. It also has BT media streaming, backup camera, USB audio, HDRadio, GPS, DVD.... on and on and on. I bought it from Amazon and did the install myself with a SW relay and steering wheel controls. Install took me maybe 4 hours total.



I'm super happy with it.

 

I had the pioneer avic120 installed a couple months ago with the Metra dash kit.....impressions and lessons learned the hard way

-bluetooth works great...one of the best features. If my 2011 had the bluetooth package when i bought it i would be kicking myself for getting the nav but alas

- i rarely use the navigation feature since i know my way to work but when i do it works well

- ipod integration is awesome, shows the artwork on the screen and if you have pandora it pulls it right onto the screen

- backup camera - idiots at the shop that installed mine had it for 3 weekends in a row trying to get the backup camera to work. They said they called toyota who confirmed it is a 12v camera but after the fact i find out that it is a 6v. The shop ended up putting an aftermarket camera in the stock location but it gives nowhere near the "fisheye" visibility of the stock camera.

-Installation was much more expensive than i expected. Unit was $800-$900. Install was about $400. I hadnt counted on it being that expensive but because of the splicing of wires i had to have the "pros" do it.

+$500 deductable for someone smashing my rear window trying to get into my truck to get it.

+$15 for a used Ford Ranger radio on craigslist to disect and use the faceplate as a cover for when i park around town.

In hindsite....for the $$$. i wish i had just gotten the bluetooth package from the factory and gotten a cheap portable navigation for when i need it......makes you want to vomit when you walk out of work and see glass all over the inside of your 2 month old fresh off the lot truck and see that someone has rummaged all through it. Luckily, i guess something made them scatter the scene before they could rip my dash apart.

 

I have the Pioneer Avic D3 which is a little older model, but the bluetooth quality is good enough to call clients from the car, and the navigation system works well 99% of the time. I haven't shopped the new ones recently, but if i were i would consider pioneer first.

 

I originally installed the Pioneer AVH-3300BT but removed it since it doesn't stream music via BT. If it did stream audio via BT it would have definitely stayed. It had so many user friendly features that I really liked.

 

You still got that 3300BT Doc? I'd be interested in buying it.

 

I have the Pioneer Z110 and have not had any issues with the bluetooth.

NX501 in mine and I love it. I've only had it installed for a couple of days but have used the bluetooth to make calls several times and it's worked very well. It has a built in mic, so no need to route a wire. The GPS antenna was very easy to conceal and mount and the NAV seems to work great. The installation took me a few hours, but I'm a perfectionist and wanted to make sure i had everything exactly right before finishing the install. One word of advise about dash kits, though...I could only find the Metra dash kit in black so I went with it. I'm not sure how the scosche is but I was a little disappointed with Metra. The final product looks great, in my opinion, but the mounting design is flawed.

I haven't modified the system to use the OEM backup camera yet, so I can't comment on that, but it seems very easy to use with the Clarion. All in all, I would suggest adding it to the list of head units to consider. I couldn't find many reviews of the nx501 but was able to find a couple videos on youtube demonstrating the features and how it's used and I was impressed. They sold me on purchasing it and so far I'm happy. It helped that it was one of the lower priced units with all the options I wanted, too.

The interface is pretty cool. It's very similar to smartphones, with the swiping and what-not. ipod interface works great, though I haven't quite figured out all the controls yet. Like I said, I've only had it for a couple of days and haven't really had a lot of time to mess with it. Hell, I finished up the installation while I was a work because I was bored lol. Anyway, it's a unit worth considering, IMO. Hope this helps.

G'day all,

Considering an in dash nav system; from the info in this post I'm leaning towards the kenwood dnx6960, bur still have questions:

Since kenwod has teamed with Garman, how do you update the GPS maps on the Kenwood? It's a relatively easy process with the standard Garmin GPS units, just take it out of the truck hook to computer and update.

Do in dash nav systems come with a replacement face plate?

Does the installation of a in dash nav system in require in-shop pros or are they basically designed for most anyone with average mechanic/electric abilities?

Pioneer Z120BT here as well, but i also put in a top of the line paging Python security system. Then at least when the window breaks, i will be there rather quickly, and with a CCW, the dude had better be gone or he is going to jail. Very little crime like that in Montana though.

NX501 for two months now and love it! Installation was straight forward. I bought the Scoshe Dash Kit which seemed to install rather easily... it is rather tight behind the unit though with all the cables and the larger head unit.
