My own personal Failboat

So yesterday we had about 15 to 20mph winds, maybe higher. so i am getting ready for work this morning and i walk down stairs and find that a huge limb has fallen on our sailboat. the only damage was to the mast, but the mast is completely destroyed. it's aluminum and bent at a 30 degree angle and pinched, so there is no hope of bending it back. i dont have any idea what a new mast costs or where to find one for a 1974 POS. Any sailors have any advise?

i was hoping to find the same mast so we could re-use the rigging. alot of the rigging is newish and its all in really good shape. i'm hoping the little metal rods on the sails (no idea what they are called) that actually run into the groove in teh mast are universal. meaning, i hope most mast's and sails of that type all use the same size crap. (this would be alot easier if i knew the names of stuff)

 

haha! well when you're right you're right, even if you are a mega retard. my friend had a whole tree rip out of the ground roots and all and almost break his ski nautique in half and dented up his F250 super duty... and he just lost his job last week so its a real kick in the nuts for him.

There are a lot of old boats out there with similar masts. The important thing is the length and mounting the hardware back in the right spots. Other less important dimensions would be the width and depth of the extrusion unless the mast is round in which case it'd be the diameter. Keep in mind that bigger within reason is better. Do not go smaller.

You can check around with local boatyards and marinas, there might be something lying around that they'd probably let go pretty cheap just to get it off the property. It wouldn't hurt to ask on craigslist and I'd also try asking on any user group sites for your boat.

If you really can't find anything that will work there are companys that make new extrusions which probably have exactly what you're looking for but it won't be cheap. For a boat your size I'll GUESS you're talking 8 to 12 bucks a foot plus shipping if it's not close enough to pick up. Here's a link to a company in CT that I know prople have worked with with good results. Dwyer's mast page Pick your size and they'll make it any length you need. The perfect fitting mastheads they sell for the extrusions are a pretty good deal especially if you're not sure how good the old part is or if it's frozen in place on the mast.

Any way you can cut the mast at the bend and slide a smaller or larger (mast/post/whatever) acting as a sleeve either external or internal and then bolt it/fasten it back together?

Will be on the lookout for a boat with a permanent left hand tack.

It was windier than that. I pulled a set of trailers from Sumter to Columbia yesterday and had a great time watching people trying to pass me on the left with that back trailer being shoved into their lane.

 

i dont have any idea what you just said. are we still talking about boats? the mast is 20 ft and its round except it's got an open end where you stick in the little metal ends of the sails to raise them up. i think it may be time to just use it as a party boat with no sails and buy another sail boat. replacing a mast seems like alot of work

actually they were both paid off. his truck is badass, i actually really like it. he was actually trying to sell the ski boat. i dont even know if it was insured... i think it was but i'm not positive

 

i doubt taht would work but at the same time it sounds like something me and my room mate would actually try....
