Building a console vault

did you bolt it down to the console or did you just slip it in? Very cool either way

 

Bolted down, absolutely. Had to get 2 bolts to replace the originals as it takes about 1/4" to 1/2" more. I tried to pull up on the box and it's dead solid. Thanks

Not yet. I'm planning on buying some plastic caps at some point.

My original plan was to build in a recess similar to the one in the console itself that allows the bolt heads to be below the bottom but that would have taken some of the strength from the design. If I went with a heavier gauge for the bottom and sides I would probably have gone ahead and done that.

This is f**king awesome, I've been considering a mod like this since I got the truck and wanted a lockbox. I would just want mine to be totally concealed, no hinge or key hole visible, that way NO ONE can find it. But awesome build all together, two thumbs up.

 

I almost did that. It would only require some cardboard used to build up the top around the hinge and taper down so the lock isn't recessed that much. then carpet over the whole thing leaving the area around the lock unattached. Personally, I like looking at it and thinking "Just try it, Punk!" but that's just me...

Given the very clear differences in both appearance and locking mechanism I don't think there would be a patent problem even if I were to sell them. It is simply a different solution to the same problem.
I have no intent to sell these and was simply documenting my attempt to solve a problem and show others how they might do so themselves. Hopefully some have been given sufficient assurance that an individual can indeed do this with relatively basic equipment.
I will reiterate the previous poster's comment that joining a forum simply to warn someone about possible patent infringement for an item they built themselves and have no intent to sell is very poor taste and will not gain you customers in this type of environment. If I could figure out how to change the title of the thread to Console "Lockbox thingy" I would so you don't get upset.

Very nice job. I think I would have spray lined it but that's just me. I gotta say job well done.
