    Hi,

I'm hoping some of the Maryland residents can help me out here. I have lived in Richmond, VA for the majority of my life and will be moving to Southern Maryland sometime in the near future. It's a bit nervous and exciting to move somewhere new but I have no idea what the different areas of Southern Maryland has to offer.

    Here's what I'm looking for:
    1. The best schools in the area
    2. Established or up and coming retail shopping (malls, shopping centers)
    3. Somewhere that screams family and suburbs

Is there anything like that in Southern Maryland? I plan on taking a trip up there either this weekend or next weekend, so with your help and feedback, it would help create a guide for places to check out.

    Thanks!

I live in Calvert County (Lusby over 30 years) the Schools are the best of the three so MD. Counties. Where will you be working? The bridge between Calvert and St. Mary's can get backed up in the evening. Depends on what your looking for. Walmart, Target and most of the box stores are in St. Marys. Lusby/Solomons has Giant,Food Lion and 3-4 differnt drug stores. Good resturants on both sides of the river. If you look in Calvert stay away from the Ranch estates and White Sands. So. MD was a great place for my kids to grow up. I work in Baltimore and drive the 75 miles each way!

    Greetings DPAK,

I have been here for 2 years. I do not have children in school but hear the schools are ok and ppl are friendly enough to give information.

May I suggest getting a map, locating areas that interest you and then during your visit stop by county sheriff's office to inquire about statistics in those areas. You should be able to find out how often calls are made in certain neighborhoods. That was more interesting to me than school systems to use when I moved here.

I noted that you did not answer the question of where you were going to be employeed, that could determine the areas you want to consider to live.

    Hope this helps....

    Too many to list

Thats pretty much right on, Calvert county and St. Marys are IMO the best areas in southern MD. You want to avoid pg county and charles county, not the best schools or much of anything really.
