Making and Painting my homemade galvanized toolbox!

So I was bored at work and decided to make a tool box for my truck. Not nearly as nice as a bought one, but cheap (free metal, $10 parts from hardware store). I chose 16 ga galvanized sheetmetal. Heres some pics
Sitting on the bench after I cut it up and mocked it up

Installing the rivits (1/8" steel, cant be other metal because of galvanic corrosion) and using the vacuum to keep the shavings from going everywhere

Rivets spaced nicely!

Put the top on with heavy duty hinges using bolts through pilot holes
Didnt fit great but it was the biggest piece of that type sitting around I could find so I made it work

Passes the tool carrying test

Wiped down with vinegar to get some zinc off, and sanded it really good with 220 sand paper

Quick first coat of rust inhibitor primer

2nd coat of primer

1st coat of gloss black

After 3 coats of gloss black, and 2 coats of clear coat

Still needs a little buff and re spray a few spots but Im ready to slap the lock on it

Finished product. I put 4 rubber squares on the bottom so it sticks to the bed ad it works perfect

 

If its not watertight, what are you going to keep in it?

 

Its going underneath my tonneau cover so it doesnt need to be. Its 28x16x15high in the back

Cool! It's tough to paint galvanized due to soponification. I'm Impressed with your results using only a weak acid and sanding.

 

Ya its a bit better then I expected. It fits perfectly in the rear and a bolt up through the middle drain hole holds it good. Im gonna use in on long trips and camping to take tools incase something goes wrong. Nothing special, just fun to make. Im making one of those "tuffy compartments" for the rear though out of black iron and its turning out A LOT better. Welded too
