Bed linered my rock sliders!

Hey guys posted before about rust removal etc. Took damn near forever but got the one side done!

Basically stripped the rust off with several types of wire wheel and just did my best to get into every nook and cranny. I mostly had bare metal, so hoping that will cut the mustard when it comes to rust prevention. I'll find out!

Anyways, here is what they started out looking as (This is actually just a picture of the side I haven't done yet):

Anyways, after taking forever stripping, sanding, scuffing, etc. I painted with the bedliner in the aerosol can. The brand is EZ liner. Has held up on my bumper great so far, though I have yet to be hard on it.

I also masked off a bit of and sprayed the rock chip absorbing part of the body below the doors. They were chipped all to hell. It seemed almost to be like gelcoat or fiberglass under there. Some kind of anti-rust/chip thing Toyota does. Anyways, you can see it all in this pic:

All in all very happy with how it turned out!

Ya and the crappy iPhone pic really does not capture the texture well.

It is a nice tough looking texture, I always do a final spray from a ways away so only the big dots hit the surface. Gives it a really nice grippy texture.

I'll try for a better pic of that later.

Looks awesome. What were they painted with before? How long did the EZ Liner need to cure? Still trying to figure out what I'll do with mine when they arrive, and I'm torn between just black rattlecan and what you did.

 

Well black rattlecan was what was on before

Not sure what brand though. It rusted right out underneath it. Nothing structural fortunately. One day I need to find someone with a good mechanics pit, or raised platform and do my whole frame in some good paint like the POR15 that has been recommended to me.

Well when I did my bumper, the EZ Liner was a medium hardness rubbery texture within an hour. Felt dry etc but could still be marked.

Next day it was a tough rubbery texture, pretty hard to mark but still doable.

Not sure how long after, it was pretty much hard to the touch, but if you pushed your fingernail in, could tell it had some give. Normal bedliner hardness basically.

At this stage its real tough. I was hitting it with stuff, kicking it, not a mark on it.

I personally wouldn't drive for 2-3 hours after applying, and wouldn't put it to the test so to speak, for a week or so. (IE I wont take mine and high center myself or fend off stumps...for about a week )

Not only that, but with the rattlecan I found them fairly slippery when wet, where as this should be much more grippy when using it as a step up.

Ya sounds like your Rust-Oleum liner isn't holding up that well, though it sounds better than paint. A lot of reports of people with paint over the mild steel havin it just rust right out from under them, like mine did.

If all I get are a few rock chips I have to touch up, I don't mind

Thanks guys. I got my bedliner at Canadian Tire. They sell the same brand at Lordco car parts.

Not sure where to get it, but toyotadude5 bedlinered his whole fenders and rockerpanel with EZ Liner so you may want to PM him and ask where he got it.

I JUST put it on, so I am not making any longevity claims, and no idea if it is any better or worse than the rustoleum stuff.

 

It would help if you'd put your front mud flaps on...that'll keep all the road debris from beating the new paint job up.

 

Truck didn't come with them.

Also now that I own it, I will be able to keep on top of touching it up.

 

I have rustoleum on mine and they're chipped quite badly. I'll be doing this soon probably. Thanks for the pictures.

 

Again I don't know if this will be better than rustoleum. Its an aerosol just like it. but I have high hopes. I also put on like 4 coats so hopefully that helps.

 

Wow looks great. They look brand new. Good job.

 

They cleaned up surprisingly well. Especially when you look at how pitted and crappy they were.
