very loud squeal at cold start up

When I start my truck after setting over night it squeals very loud. I think it is a pulley or the tensioner or the alt. are any of these parts covered under the power train warranty?
I searched and couldn't find anything, maybe I didn't word it right.

Have you washed the engine or sprayed anything on it where it could have gotten on the belts? Could just be that the belts are loose.

 

tighten or replace the serpentine belts.

 

No haven't washed the engine or done anything, it just started this a few days ago. The truck only has 55,000 miles on it, I can't imagine the serpentine belt could be bad already ?

 

I've got a weird squeal / grinding noise on start up sometimes. Took to dealer and of course they could not duplicate the problem.

 

I don't think you can tighten the belt on these thrucks, auto tensioner.

 

As stated before, it's most likely the serpentine belt. The best way to test this is when you first start it up spray the belt with wd-40 or brake cleaner anything that lubricates will work, if the squealing goes away it's the belt, if not then it's a bearing somewhere.

I've pretty much tried everything on mine and it still squeks. I've given up truing to fix it. I just let it warm uo for a few and it goes away.

 

I think I may have experienced the same squeal. It was during a week brutally cold -10 to -15 days. The battery had a bit of a struggle at each start and when the engine fired up it there was a loud squeal that occurred for 1 or seconds and abruptly stopped. I waited for 10 of the longest coldest minutes of my life to let the engine temp warm up enough to register on the gauge before setting off each time. My truck is about a year old and has less than 10K miles so I am pretty confident that there isn't any wearing out. I have no idea where the sound came from and it stopped once the temperature warmed up so... I dunno?

 

It was the belt. The cold will do that to the rubber.

 

Update: I just got a chance to look over the belt and pulleys. When I started the engine it was squealing, shut off engine and put a socket and ractchet on tensioner and worked it back and forth, restarted engine still squealing, turned off engine. Gave the inside of the belt a little shot of deep creep and the squeal went away, looks like its the belt.

When I cold start below 10 degrees I get a quick squeal (even when new). It's the property of the belt material.

 

I have had the same problem twice (110k miles ) and in both cases a new belt resolved the issue. I could spray a silicon based lube on the inside of the belt and would it instantly go away.

 

I'm having the same problem just replaced 2 idle pulleys new belt and a new power steering pump/ pulley. I still have the squeak until late truck is hot.

How did you figure out which belt was squealing? or did you deep creep all the belts?
I have a similar problem with my 2002 tacoma...squeals loud on a cold engine, but stops when the engine has warmed up. Maybe I will tryout the deep creep treatment.

 

In the olden days I would use a bar of soap on the underside of the belt. Worked like a charm and stays around. And depending on the soap, you might get the smell of an Irish spring!

 

Don't use lubricants or soap on the friction surface of your belt. With the engine shut off, apply a thin smear of plain white toothpaste to the friction side, then start the engine and let it idle. May take a few shutdown and reapply toothpaste before you get good effect and the squeal subsides, assuming the squeal was a belt slipping. The mild abrasives in the toothpaste remove the glaze from the belt rubber and help it grip the driven pulleys.

This is a temporary fix until the belt can be replaced.

 

For now, the soap trick helped out a bit...I guess I will have have to replace the belts, but I am waiting for about 150k so I can replace the waterpump, timing belt, and the squeaking belts too.
