Last night I was under my newly purchased 2009 Tacoma. I noticed a small amount of oil on the bottem/ back of the motor where the transmission meets up. There is a black plastic cover right there as well, that seems to be covering the area where the leak is coming from.

Has anyone seen this before or have any input ?

I am in contact with the dealership but I am just over my 2,500 or 60 day full warrenty.

    Truck has 56,000 miles.

Forgot about the factory 60 month / 60,000 powertrain everyone gets. Took it to Toyota yesterday, they found the main rear seal to be leaking, so they are ordering the part to replace under warrenty next week.

Such joyous bulletproof Toyota action nowadays. They had to replace my rr main seal at about 53k....after arguing with me for 5k miles about it when I was trying to tell them it isn't a sloppy oil change. Keep an eye on your rear axle seals too, and the front oil seal and the power steering rack seals. They didn't argue much about those tho. They did try to say some seepage was "normal" on the axle seals when I pointed it out the first time. Then it was dripping on the rims and they couldn't make any more excuses......and they had to replace the brake shoes because a warrantied drivetrain item shit on the wear item causing them to be bad. And they just swapped out the head gasket on my 2.7 because that was the source of the apparent leaky timing cover they tried sealing 3 times to no avail, was not the timing cover. Never dealt with any of these items before 250,000 miles on my 82 prerunner and it got punished mercilessly, not babied like this one. Can you say went the way of the "big" 3 ? Any Toyota without the first character of the VIN being a "J" has quality issues IMO.

Hey thanks for all the heads up! I will keep an eye on those areas, especially before that factory warrenty runs out! I had a 2001 I just sold with the 3.4 and 147,000 was bone dry under neath. I hope to continue with the good reputuation of Toyota on this truck.

I'm blaming the whole collective pile. Where is the rear axle from? Where did the bendable tailgates come from? Where did the fucked frames with the eng mount brackets caving in come from? and the shitty incapable leaf packs? voodoo stereos? 6 speed bell housings? leaky steering rack? squeaky clutch? leaky fresh air inlet? whistling windshields? on and on and on.......nothing I've ever experienced with any toyota I've ever owned with a VIN that started with a J, and there have been plenty. How many recalls or TSBs for any of the ones still coming from Japan do you know of? All these discussions are basically pointless beyond just saying every car maker out there has some bullshit nonsense to deal with in one way or another and nothing is really built to last that is priced within practical sane reach of most of us in order to keep capitalism churning. If it doesn't last then it means more purchases more often. And there's this many issues with the "best" there is? It's ridiculous however you care to look at it. The far flung seperated manufacturing and assembly locations don't do anything to help the situation.

I hate to dissapoint you but FJ's are Japan made and only slightly better.
The rest I agree, nobody wants to make decent car because does not pay. Partially I blame US consumers. People don't demand quality cars or cars that can be maintained. Most consumers are now more interested in gimmicks that suppose to fix stupidity. So we pay extra $5000 for shitty electronics instead solid axle and set of lockers. Also we would get more paint on the truck.

    wayne73,

Just for the heck of it before your 36,000 runs out check your head lights for burnage and cracks where the L/R driving bulds stays on, (not considered driving lights for insurance, go figurel) both sides. I caught mine at 35,963, so they had to replace both at $383.00 or so each plus labor. This light problem might only be on 09 models, dunno .

The REAL problem I had with rear axle is the shitty seals that leaked at 48k.

Tailgate should've had been that lame to start with.

Frame should have been good to begin with.

Test shit before selling mass produced, if 3 leafs bottomed with less than max load then they should have come with 4 from the get go.

Yeah, there was a couple few yr stretch of oem stereos that were doing weird shit that many had to have replaced by dealer. Lots of threads in here.

6 speed pilot bearing issue where bell housings have to be replaced and something sleeved with steel so it doesn't do same shit.

Yes, steering rack had seals that failed at about 65k....way early.

Not talking about 6 speed chirping, talking about 5 speed creaky clutch sound, nothing new here, lots have issue.

truck is from Freemont plant, that = California

Shouldn't have to glue windshield for it not to whistle.

The point is, if Toyota is still using past performance to market new shit then we should not be dealing with this kind of crappy stuff. Yes, they are still the best.............the best of all the crappy built shit nowadays....for the moment maybe but I think all vehicles pretty much suck the same amount, just in different ways.

Nope just Toyotas made here. Riding on their history, not what is current.

Yep, when something costs 4 times as much and lasts about 1/4 the amount of time before having similar issues while being taughted as having same quality as before I'll bitch, sure. Sucks and I know damn well how to just deal with it. What else is there besides just dealing with all the busted ass overhyped overpriced garbage for sale nowadays. I can see where some with no point of reference other than maybe riding in one back when they were younger and they had much better build quality could be confounded by the comparisons tho. Location of production is irrelevant today because economic pressures of just getting by cutting corners on shit and doing just enough to not be sued are everywhere. I just haven't come to terms with it and I still expect decent reasonable stuff for the shit ton of money that things cost.

I guess what all this banter has to do with oil leaks is that they shouldn't be occurring until 200k unless you race or dog the shit out of your vehicles.......and I'm not. DD to work and back shouldn't be this stressful to all the seals that have had to be replaced so far.

    Those days are over.

Cars that could be repaired with simple tools ( i remember replacing fuel pump on the side of the road and using part of the tire tube as valve :D It took screwdriver and a knife )

Well, the part about the rr main already being replaced on mine prematurely does which is what the problem is he is having. There is nothing to figure out about fixing his problem other than which dealership to have the work done at.

Some of the stuff I listed that many others have experienced that would make it more of a typical thing hasn't happened to mine and other things haven't happened to many or been posted about but has happened to mine. Mostly, I'm just disappointed in the overall quality from then to now. Driving habits have mellowed significantly, environmental variables are unchanged & yet there always seems to be some little nagging issue about this one that pops up about 200k sooner than I still expect from a Toyota. Nothing that'll push me to a bicycle anytime soon, other than for recreation and exercise....it's just I want better shit for everyone forking out the coin for highly toughted products than we seem to get anymore and not just from Toyota....but I digress and will just leave it on topic as "I've had too many oil leaks on this truck for it's age, mileage and treatment."

BREAK is every other carmakers thing, Toyotas are supposed to WEAR very slowly over the course of 500k miles, not 50k.
