You can put a ARB air locker in yours. I have them in both of my diffs and have never been happier. I'll never use another type of locker. Never had one failure or been left without a locker or had one get stuck.

<-- Needs one but wants 2!

ohh and, DCLB FTMFW! It takes a special kind of slow person to try to put a DCLB in some of the places I have previously.

I think X-Runners are worthless pieces of shit because they're not good at offroading.

OR RULES & SPORT OWNERS ARE WEINERS!

    wait, I mean

SPORT RULES & OR OWNERS ARE POO POO HEADS!

Ok now that I've chosen sides and offended everyone equally I have a question......

I just read all 12 pages of this ... the entertainment value alone was worth it ... I'm shopping for a used truck and trying to wrap my head around package options across several year models, and I'm new to Toyota so I don't know the norms, and MY HEAD HURTS!

My question is ... NOT COUNTING all the things that can be changed/ added (shocks, lockers, wheels and even the ATRAC ... I read the explanation on that thing and, I don't care how awesome it is, it sounds like I need 2 GOsh Darn NASA engineers and Mutha Scratchin Bill Gates with me just to work it right ... NO THANKS) what are the differences between the Sport and Off Road (as in the inability to get the LB in the OR) that can't be EASILY changed down the road? ........

Thank you, that is all ......

Wow, if you read all 12 pages, I wonder how you didn't have your mind figured out for you by all the guys here on TW? LOL

In a nutshell, the Off Road 4WD comes from the showroom with the most traction ability (Rear locker and A-TRAC in L4 + hydraulic brake booster which enhances the limited slip system in H4). A-TRAC is an automatic 'locker-like' system on the front and rear that directs power only to tires with traction and away from tires that otherwise would spin. Steering ability is not affected with A-TRAC, but is with traditional lockers making A-TRAC superior when you need to steer tight turns on a mountain trail. The Off Road comes with 16" all terrain tires.

The Sport 4WD is a truck that has the appeal to many who want the look of a sport car on a truck, fake hood scoop and color matced body parts. To achieve more traction you can either modify the wiring to provide TRAC in L4 (4 low trac/ yellow wire mod) or add aftermarket lockers to the front and rear for thousands of dollars more. The Sport comes with 17" all weather/street tires.

Nothing wrong with a Sport... just as long as you understand what the Off Road has, and that you don't want it or prefer the Sport look and don't mind the added $$$ to give it more traction. The long bed is not available on the Off Road double cab, because for tight trails it wouldn't be the best vehicle.

    completely stock
the only thing i have noticed is the slightly smaller rear diff in the OR has a rep for occasionally grenading... one bad thing about the OR. Plus it doesnt come in a reg cab. If your going to make a true offroad vehicle why not an access cab shortbed on a reg cab frame with v6, rr locker, atrac and the other good stuff...that would be an offroad vehicle. Regardless, my reg cab kick ass and has been way crazier places than most stock TRD offroads... so $18,000 reg cab FTW!!!

My Taco, like most Taco's here, will spend most of it's life on the pavement and is necessary to get up the mountain roads in winter.

With that said, the "out of the showroom" Sport has a much better appearance than any "out of the showroom" OR or SR5 I have seen. And if I needed a locker in the future, I would not hesitate to install an ARB rear locker.

Exactly... if you don't need the Off Road (because you aren't going off road), then get whatever Tacoma LOOKS good to you!

I am not anti-Sport... I am anti Toyota sales staff who don't explain honestly the features of both models (or leave out the advantages of the Off Road) in case the buyer wants his truck to have the most 4WD ability without adding thousands to it!

this thread was so entertaining to read, I am getting a 4x4 soon and this definitely has swayed my decisions on sport or offroad, but not sure which way its swayed it yet. hahaa

I wish I had A-TRAC. I like technology and pushing buttons. Kinda bummed about it.

At least I have a rear locker. I'm sure it will do just fine.

Do Sports have mechanical/clutch limited slip difs?

    I'm thinking no....

I watched my buddy do a peg-leg burn-out Sunday in his 09 Sport....

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...

05-08 sports (and other SR5s had the option) had mechanical LSDs, now all 09+ have autoLSD. mechanical isnt an option anymore. he has a button on his dash to turn on the autoLSD.

Ok. So whippersnapper's comment applies to 08+ Sports as well.

His comment was a general comment about open-difs.
