If you go to any type of 4x4 event, you'll likely see a lot of folks running CB or maybe FRS to communicate.

$50 for a cheap one. $100 for an expensive one and another $50 for an antenna.

ya its not bad. Its worth the time. It took me about 30 min to an hour. Its just a matter of pulling off your plastic doorsils and running wires from the battery to the cb then run a wire to the antenna and then mount the antenna. I could do a writeup if you want to go through with it.

CB radio is a holdover from the 1960s and 70s... it's been made totally obsolete by cell phones and FRS/GMRS UHF walkie talkies, but it's still cool as hell!

    "Breaker 1-9, breaker 1-9..."

If you're serious about radio, get the Ham radio license and install a 2-meter/70-centimer dual-band radio in your truck. Much more useful than 4-watt sometimes-4-mile CB.

There are so few groups that use 2m radios that the cb is a better bet--at least to communicate with the group during a club event.

There are other benefits to a ham license so getting one and using the 2m band is still a great idea.

I don't talk much on mine, but on long trips, you can listen to the truckers chat. Most of the time, they'll tell you where the cops are setting up speed traps, and where accidents are ahead of you...sometimes even ways to avoid getting caught in the traffic around those areas. For the money, they're pretty darn handy to have...priceless if you're traveling in a group, such as moving from town to town and need to work out pit stops and such.
