2.7 4 cyl guys... Needing some input.

I have a leaky oil pan seal. I was considering changing the timing chain and stuff when I pull the oil pan off. I have no way of knowing if the milage is correct on the truck since it was a basket case of parts.

Any thoughts on how often that stuff needs changed? Anyone know what the measurements should be for the chain to know if it is stretched too much?

You said the motor was apart of a basket case of parts, so is the motor in the truck? or out of the truck?

The 2.7 has 2 timing chains. One is for the actual timing (long one) and the other is for the balance shaft (shorter one). If the motor is in the truck it's going to be a PITA for you. The 4wd is going to have to be dropped, all the accesories come off, etc etc. I have some pictures of mine with all new chains, guides, and tensioners but I'll have to put it up when I get out of school. I pulled the motor out of my truck to do this, but the rear main seal was leaking so that was replaced as well. You also mentioned the oil pan is leaking. Are you positive it's the oil pan? Where is it leaking? It's possible your rear main seal could be leaking, too. In that case, if the motor is in the truck, it would more than likely be easier for you to pull the motor.

 

Engine is in the truck. the truck itself was a basket case. The front end of the oil pan seal is where its leaking... About the front 1/3 of the pan.

I was looking on alldata and it showed you can drop the pan without pulling the engine. Unbolt it, and that will allow you enough room to unbolt the oil pump pick up tube. remove the pump pick up and then the pan will slide out.

Does that sound correct???

 

Okay then your rear main isn't a problem.

As for removing the pan in the truck I really don't know how do-able that is. The oil pick-up is bolted to the front cover if I remember correctly. I removed the oil pan out of the truck so it was much easier for me. I do remember the gasket was a pain and it took some prying to break it loose. I'm sure it's possible to get it out with it in the truck, but it'll be a time-consuming task at the least. I didn't use a gasket when I put it back together just a crap ton of RTV.

 

All it takes is formagasket to fix it. Put it on and let it sit for at least 12 hours.

 

My truck had 170K when I changed mine. There was very little wear on the plastic parts. They hold up really well. The entire engine had very little wear. It blew my mechanic away. We changed all of the seals and did a head gasket job.

You should be okay...

 

just gunk that stuff right over the leaking gasket??? Doesn't seem like that would be a good fix.

 

No you pull it off remove the old gasket with a razor blade untill its raw metal and no gasket is left. Run a thick bead of permatex gasket stuff around it and put it back on. But you have to let it cure for 12 hours before you put oil back in it and start it.
