What would TW do? Wood laminate or tile?

If you've ever pulled up carpet before, it gets nasty regardless of how much you vacuum. Its a dirt and dust magnet especially for people with allergies. I hate mine with a passion. With two dogs my carpet gets gross.

 

I never realized it until I pulled ours up - then talking to others that renovated, not one of them put carpet back in after realizing what it's really like. Seems like more of a carryover from the 70's and early 80's builder grade housing... shag baby!

I was just quoted $3.00 per sqft installed for hardwood floors. Includes everything out the door.

 

My buddy's townhouse reeked of dog urine because his dog peed all over his carpet. I finally convinced him one day to replace it with laminate floors. Well....my convincing was more like..."hey, we're putting in laminate, your house smells like ass and I hate coming over here. [pulls out razor blade and cuts carpet] Welp, now you have no choice. Let's go to Floor & Decor!"

Since we replaced it, the house smells great now...actually doesn't really have a "smell" at all anymore.

 

Take your shoes off inside , and use carpet .

Shoes are for outside .

good idea if you're going to have nasty carpet.

 

That seems to be more of a dog training issue than a floor covering issue .

agreed, although I've found that if you're going to have carpet and pets, invest in a shampooer! We do ours probably 3 times a year, on top of normal vacuuming of course...

it certainly keeps it cleaner, longer. you'll see when you pull it up someday. it's still a dirt/dust magnet - and sometimes people have these things called 'pets'....

 

I'm a General Contractor , I've seen lots of carpet come up .

If a pet pisses all over your floors , it doesn't really matter what the surface is at some point .

 

True but carpet absorbs it a lot quicker and it's hard to get it out.

I have a hoover steamvac that I run 3-4 times a year and it gets the carpets clean and smelling nice...however that's short lived with dogs. I cannot wait to pull up all of my carpet. When I get my bonus next year I will replace all of the flooring in the house with engineered hardwood. I really want to sand/polish & stain the concrete slab but it's not as popular for resale. I know my dog would love it. He typically sleeps on the bathroom floor or the kitchen floor because he likes the cold. He used to sleep on the AC registers at our last house when he was a little puppy.

You silly canadians and your love for carpet. BTW canadian bacon is a fraud! it's not really bacon, just ordinary ham. Blasphemy!!!

 

There are some very nice stained and polished concrete applications. When it's done it resembles terrazzo. I wouldn't throw it out as a cheap, undesirable flooring option.

Carpet is nice if you live where it gets cold. I will always at least have large area rugs in bedrooms and living rooms as long as I'm in New England. Nothing worse than your feet freezing just walking around your own house. I'm not a big fan of wall to wall (OK in bedrooms, not living spaces) but it is functional when you live in a colder climate.

 

By no means am I throwing it out. I would love to do it. I love it. But It's popularity hasn't caught on quite yet. I would probably get more resale value with engineered hardwoods than I would with stained concrete. Especially here in GA. I still may do it...someone can always put carpet over it if they don't like it. I plan on selling my house as soon as I can get what I paid for the house back out of it or atleast where I can cut a check for the loss and not lose sleep over it.

 

My house has a heated coloured concrete slab downstairs .

Do you guys really think Canadians call it " Canadian bacon " ? That's an American term .

PS , the OP's question says nothing about dogs.

The OP should continue the tile if he can find some to match. It will make it appear uniform since he has it everywhere else.
