Exactly what I'm trying to say. The press depth is precise and holy hell I would be worried about dropping a needle in there.

Naw, no locker. For the one time a year if that i need a locker i can always pull out the winch and the rest of the time I do have A-Trac.

Im paying $1500 for cryo treated 4:56 gears, new needle bearings, and synthetic gear oil.

Okay, so pulling that bearing not such a good idea. I thought about the "what if one of the rollers drops inside?" and was worried about that. Then you have to tear the whole thing apart to find it. And maybe the specially made part that others had was what they were using to get the "seat" depth correct? No idea who it was anymore as that thread is still missing. So I'll replace my axle in June and hope I don't still have a vibe. Steven's going to have a lot of reading when he gets home from work.:D

And thanks for the extra advice/pics on the axle.

This is an INstalled price Kevin. No way im doing gears myself. I have followed the install prices over at FJC forums and it seems $1500 is about average for parts and install. I was quoted $1330... but i added cryo treatment and synthetic gear oil. So i think im getting a good deal considering im paying what others are for just a basic parts/install.

Yea, I know, I thought they were more around $1200 installed. I need to save up a bit more money. My truck is hating me pushing those tires around with stock gears. I'm just asking for stuff to break.

Oh yeah, I Don't think you will find a place to do it for that price unless you know someone and if they did offer to do it for that price I would be skeptical of their quality. The place that is doing mine has a very good rep in this area.

There is only one shop that I know of within 25 miles of me that does it does this type of work as their main focus, so I'll probably go with them. :annoyed:

I'm guessing thats the price for taking him the whole truck, and not just the diffs? Just wondering if it could be cheaper by dropping the diffs yourself and handing them over.

Yes that is and yes it could be done cheaper if you drop the thirds yourself and bring just the thirds in.

Who are you going through, if I may ask. Inchworm?
Just curious for when I have the money to finally throw in 4:56 gears with an arb.

4:56's with an ARB? Good decision man. I had those with a 4:1 T-case in my old Jeep. They kicked ass. Plenty of torque without sacrificing much on acceleration

The gears are tedious though. We had to rebuild the rear diff on my first Jeep twice, had a Tru Trac locker that would catch around corners while on on gas, and it ruined my rear axle. The Tru Trac spun one of my axle shafts in half, and out so much stress on my carrier that it shattered one of the bearings and chewed up my gears.

The shitty part about installing your own gears is they I've you gold paint to put on them, and you gotta carefully spin them around and make sure it's contacting evenly on every tooth, otherwise you could easy round one off or chip it.

Worth paying someone to do just because to do because they have more experience, and if it gets messed up, it's on their dime.

Yep, thats exactly what I was going for. It seems to be the best gear ratio for what I want to use my truck for. At first I was thinking about just getting a detroit or something of the likes, but I figure since I'm saving up for all this I might as well wait another month or two and go all out with the arb. I'll definitely be having someone install them for me, not taking any chances.

Get that diff drop in and see where you stand. Worst case scenario is you leave the diff drop in and lower it back to 1.75. Only cost there is another alignment (been there, done that last year going from 1.75 to .85).

On the CV Axle topic, any aftermarket ones good (I got the "stay away from Napa") or should I just stick with Toyota?

Yeah bmase, the Detroits DO work, but only if you get the whole locker. My Tru Trac was a spider gear locker, and it blew up my diff.

ARBs are worth every penny. And we used to have a steep 1/4 dirt driveway that got washed out one winter after we'd ordered cargo shipping crates for storage. The jeep, with 4:56's in 4lo and lockers engaged pulled it up the grade no problem. They're BEAST
