Another p0430 (bank 2) 05 Tacoma

Hello everyone. New to Tacoma World.
Had the check engine light on for a while now. need to be inspected in
North Carolina. Seems to be no loss in power, no exhaust smoke or fumes.
I am a 46 year old carpenter whose work is slow. Wife just had a 2 pound
preemie who spent a lot of time in th NICU. Money is tight. Hope someone can help. If I read right. bank 2 would be bank on side of # 2 cylinder which would be driver's side. # 2 cylinder is on the right, facing the vehicle.
Don't know where to start. How do I know if it is manifold cat which is between the 2 O2 sensors or cat after 2 sensors. Or could it be one of the 2 O2 sensors themselves. Toyota is an 05 Tacoma 4wd, 4.0 V6.
Only 6 years old but 110,000 miles so no warranty. Can't afford to be guessing. Hope some one can point me in the right direction.

Welcome to TW , Don't know much about your question but... look at the bottom of the page and there are threads concerning your problem , from other members and you can read their solutions or go to the "search" , on the upper blue bar and type in your code. Good Luck with the truck and everything at home.

 

Cleared code and it returned after 25 miles.
Ran vehicle at night. no glowing cat.

 

This sounds similar to what I was getting. I took my truck in under the extended warranty due to the CEL coming on. I had cleaned the MAF and the TB put everything back together and fairly quickly the light came back on. Both cats on my truck were bad and luckily got replaced. The tech never told me what code it was throwing so I can't say if this is the exact same or not.

 

Hello cotruckin. Do you know if they were the upper manifold cats or the cats after the 2nd 02 sensor that were replaced. Mine are no longer warrantied. Did you have any power loss, smell, or smoke, or anything other than CEL to make you think something was wrong. Thanks for your reply. It does sound similar.

 

Is there any way to trick the CEL so I can get an inspection and then have time to diagnose the problem. Also, is it true that gas with greater than 10% ethanol can cause a p0430 code read.

 

Ive had the same problem now for about 30,000 miles. Mech said as long as its running fine dont worry about it!

 

It was the uppers, and there was no signs other than the CEL was on.

 

I think I'll start with the upper O2 sensor.
If it turns out to bet the cat then I would probably want a new sensor anyway.
Are they hard to remove with the cat still in place. Looks tight.

 

You can test sensor before replacing. They are not cheap and if they test good it should be cat.
Silly question but when did you replace sparkplugs on that thing? Also did you check if fresh air supply to cats is working . On the end you can try burning off whats on cats. Buy good fuel (like 93 out of Shell) then take a long road trip something that will make 300 mile run. Cats dont go bad they get clogged due to unburned fuel, oil and soot.

 

Changed plugs and air filter. Cleaned throttle body and MAF sensor while at it.
Light came back at 50 miles. Same code. Usually comes back at less than 10 miles.
Thought I had it beat. Plugs looked fine. Gap a tad bit wide. Is it correct to assume a
bad MAF would affect both sides. P0420 and P0430.
Could you tell me how to check O2 sensors. Seems I'm down to them or the cat.
Pretty good w/ directions.
Forgot to mention, runs like a top.

 

Went with the Tacobox suggestion of 5/22/10 and tried the spark plug
anti-fouler on the rear O2 sensor to check for cat/O2 trouble,
Reset codes and have driven 100 miles w/out the dreaded P0430 or
any other check engine codes. Code reader says zero codes.
Must be the catalytic converter,
Great way to check cat code.

Drill out anti-fouler to 1/2 inch hole. Screw lower O2 sensor into anti-fouler,
then screw all back into exhaust. Restricts airflow across sensor thus not tripping
CEL. Pretty nifty. If light comes back on, then it is probably the O2 sensors.
CEL stays off then you know it is a cat problem. Rechecked with code reader. getting
zero codes reading, so computer thinks all is well.
I found them at O'Reilly auto parts for less than $6.00. They come 2 in a package.
Several different sizes available. Part #42009 (18mm) fits 05 Taco exhaust. I guess
HELP! is the name brand.
Cheap test and/or fix.

Good stuff, did you try making long trip with high octane fuel to see if you can burn off crap out of the cat converter ?
