tonneau covers

me again, I've also been looking for a tonneau cover, leaning towards a hard tri fold, only ones I've seen online are the bakflip, and the one toyota has. Does anyone have one and can tell me the diff, or if I should stick to toyota's brand and let them install it?

something else I'm considering is that the back flip has a drainage tube to be put inot a drain hole in the truck bed, but I have a liner so do I have to cut through that? All ideas welcome.

It looks like this one. Imagine this cover on a Taco with a basket on the cross bars and all decked out for your camping trip, vacation or off roading adventure with a group of other tacos. I can't wait personally to afford this one.

I was looking at a bakflip, but I could never get an answer on whether or not they are water tight. I spoke with a couple dealers and none of them could say if they were. I was looking for something that was water tight, so I ended up with a color matched fiberglass one. The only draw back is that it was more money.

 

from what I read they are water tight if you put that drainage tube in, if it falls loose, I can only imagine it soaking everything, does anyone know about toyota's tryfold, if its water tight? will it lock if I buy an after market lock for my tailgate

 

well I've bought a fold-a-cover G4. I don't have it yet, so no report on it, but I liked the hinges and external locking vs. the Bakflip

time will tell....

 

I actually really like taht one, haven't had time to really go in depth looking at it yet, how much was it, I ave the six foot box, how much weight can it hold... like can a guy sit on it? is it water proof? It looks great and I love taht little box for storing items near the cab. I find it a bit sketch though when it compares to others how it talks theirs up, and yet uses terms to knock down the others in saying the same things. I definitely want to know what you think when you get yours. might be worth a short drive to get one.

 

I have a Bak Flip and it works really well. I just tuck the drain hoses under the bed mat, but others have made adapters that fit into the existing drain holes in the box. I haven't had any problems with mine, and it keeps things really dry and secure. I have a pop-n-lock tailgate lock. You can't open the tonneau until you open the tailgate first. I also like the fact that the tonneau cover flips completly out of the way against the cab, giving full access to the box without removing it. If you really want to remove it, you simply loosen two knobs. I had considered a roll-up cover, but the canasters can take up a foot of your box, and the part of the cover that sticks out of the canister can take up another two inches.

 

I have an Extang Solid Fold on my '09. It is a real POS. It scratches easily and most every seal was poorly cut. I can't take it through a car wash without douching everything inside. I wish I had gotten the Undercover 1 piece.

 

As far as folding covers go...

I would say the Fold-A-Cover G4 is by far the best. Much higher quality than BakFlip. If you look around the net you will see a ton of complaints against BakFlip. They are better than they used to be but still. I will only sell them if the customer demands it.

They run about $600 shipped in the US. Fold-A-Cover runs about $725 shipped in the lower 48 and IMO is well worth the $125 extra...

 

do you have any pics man? did you install it yourself, cause I was wondering I have the liner in mine from teh factory, does it go on over it, cause all the install shots I 've seen and videos show it getting installed in a naked bed

 

I just bought a fold-a-cover tonneau from truckalterations.com. It took 4 days before they decided to ship it. I've read on Tacomaworld forums that "it doesn't use the truck bed rails." Yes, it does! And it requires you to install a big hook in the tailgate to engage the locking mechanism. I have also added 3/4" weather strip material on the forward section of the bed- good idea from another Tacomaworld contributor. I use a Dynolock mechanism to lock the tailgate, It works pretty good, yet I wonder what I will do if it 'locks-up' and will not unlock (any suggestions? I don't like the idea of cutting out the bedliner on the tailgate to correct/replace the mechanism- not that I anticipate this possibility).

 

I bought my Fold-A-Cover from this guy and he was awesome to deal with. The cover itself is exactly what I wanted and it works great. I've had mine almost a year now with no complaints at all.

 

I had an undercover, it was very very close to water tight but water could get by underpressure at the hinge points, have a Bakflip F1 now, water gets in at the 4 corners underpressure and while driving, haven't gotten around to adding more weather stripping but I like not having to take off to use almost all the bed.

 

Fold a cover G4 here, no problems. Lockable and with pop a lock, secures bed.

 

I am told that you can install a thin cable from the lock mechanism, run it out the bottom of the tailgate and secure it under the chassis. Then if the Dynolock fails, pull on the cable and you are good to go. If you call Tim at Dynolock, he'll tell you how to do this.
