    Hey all,

Looking for some information pertaining to AR's. I'd like to fully educate myself on them before I look into purchasing/building anything on my own.

I've ran a few quick searches through several forums and through google, but I can't seem to find anything that isn't a "buy this guide and I'll explain to you how to build an AR on your own" type of thing. I figure that, seeing as it's the internet, there's gotta be someone distributing this information for free.

I've found several great posts about vendors, and brands, but nothing that would explain to me anything about the parts themselves.

I know very little about AR's, how they work, what parts do what, why you would want one type instead of another, etc.

Eventually, I'd like to build my own as I enjoy tinkering and the satisfaction of DIY projects. Does anyone know of a knowledgebase that could start from the beginning? Any guides on how to builds or anything of the sort?

Hopefully you all can come through for me so I can one day soon, join the ranks of those that enjoy their rifles.

<edit> I have found the link at the top of the forum here. Giving it a thorough read. Still looking for informational how-to's and why this works in what situation. </edit>

    Thanks guys!

I am all for people "building" rifles, just don't do it thinking you are going to save a bunch of money in the process. Most rifle "builds" will end up being more expensive than finding a rifle that comes with what you are looking for. Now if you like building things and watching the end product come together and spending money on your rifle in chunks rather than all at once is more economical for you, go for it.

I do not have any sources for rifle parts but putting together one does not take much effort. Just like you found this site for Tacomas, there are endless sites focused on the AR15. AR15.com and M4carbine.net are both excellent places to find info about the black rifle.

My only other advise to you is that when you do purchase/build your rifle, resist every urge to do a tacticool rifle and learn your irons inside and out. Then when you feel comfortable with your irons, take a defensive rifle course somewhere locally and talk to those guys. Learn what works for them and figure out where you are lacking and start there when you want to accessorize.

M4carbine.net would be an excellent place to start. Yes rob_s is a valuable contributor overther but I don't agree with his opinion of (some)piston ARs though.
