they also give you more clearance during full compression so you dont scrape the shit out of your skid plate when you land on rough terrain

I'm trying to picture it in my head, but why aren't there lift spindles made for 4x4's?

Build thread in sig... 4-link long travel

one of the points of lift spindles is that they give you lift withough changing the angle of your upper and lower control arms.

on a 4x4, changing those angles also means changing the CV angle. since that's really what we have to worry about, if you're going to change the angle, might as well jsut do it the simple way with a regular style suspension lift. plus, if you look at the hub position on a lift spindle, the cv would have to somehow go through the LCA to get that low.

however, in the expedition world, they have portals. portals are essentially the lift spindles for 4x4s, even though they aren't actually a spindle. they are a grear box that attach to the hub area and transfer the drive duwn to a secondary hub. works kinda like an outboard engine if that helps. they are very big with the land rover community, as solid axles in general. of course you could fab something up, but i'm not sure if they make portals for IFS

    here's a picture
see how the center of the hub is lower than the axle shaft
    [IMG]

    and here's how they work

Thanks for the explanation. I'm pretty familiar with portals, as HMMWV's have them. Great for a couple extra inches of clearance but pretty complex components.
