Yeah I had a pair a while back that if i had 2 trees close together, I put one between the 2 trees and hung my pack on it or used it to anchor the tarp to

 

i had to use them once to help me make a tee-pee in a thunderstorm. prolly the scariest storm i slept in....

 

hahaha That brings up a good story telling session... What was the scariest situation you have been in while camping?


Mine.... either the time I got flooded out not knowing the water levels and where high tide was, the time some rednecks were shooting their guns at random targets on my side of the river right through my camp site, I was very young but remember now in the Smokey Mountains waking up to a black bear right outside the tent my parents and I were sleeping in.

 

i like this idea.....I went camping on a lake one time when it was beautiful out side. the weather turned bad real quick and i had to ditch the tent cause i really wasnt even standing anymore. so i hiked about a halfmile to my truck in the hail and got it. right as i shut the door i looked up and saw a water spout aka a tornado on the water. i started the truck and turned around and i could see a real tornado off in the distance. super freaky in my book

found next hike and camping trip!!! going this coming saterday to westmoreland park here in VA. its where the river meets the ocean. should be some interesting terrain.

 

Got an air mattress at Target yesterday. Fits perfectly and got it for 12 bucks. Figured even if I use it only for one trip and it looses air then it's only 12 bucks lost.

Any tips on camping alone?

 

Just the usuals.. tell a few people exactly where you're going and where you may venture off to. I usually pack light but when alone double up the reserves of food/water. Plan for bad weather, period. Here is south dakota at least the weather is never too predictable. If you have it, water filter, gun/ammo fresh socks/shoes or for me good hiking boots. (Get some 511 tacticle boots, AMAZING! mine are lighter than my sneakers and have never caused a single blister) bear spray I've heard helps people sleep at night although i don't carry it. And last but not least, a good knife. Idk how many random uses I've found for my knives. Its a survival must.?

 

I don't do much solo camping just because of where I go. Lot of places have nasty cliffs and hazards that if I get caught in trouble, I am screwed.

As for regular tips... what Buzzards said above is good. I always take a couple knives with me. I have an actual survival knife with a bunch of random survival pieces inside the sheath and handle, a leatherman, and usually a pocket knife on my pants.

Let your family know where you will be, what times you are expected to be in and out, also let friends know as well. You can never let too many people know. Also, give the rangers station a call and let them know where you will be, vehicle description, etc.

Be smart... If you doubt something, best thing to do is turn back. I have gotten myself in to trouble a few times by not listening to myself and kept moving forward.

 

If you can get your hands on a military entrenching tool (foldable shovel) those help with diggin mud or makin a fire pit or drainage around your tent. Anything to cut wood ie. Hatchet or handsaw.. i don't have one but a cb radio.... hmmm.. cool sunglasses? We had a rule back in the day, never get lost, and if you do look really good doing it haha

 

I accually had an army issue entrenching tool. it was nice to have but weighed a ton and i never really used it all that much. no if i need to dig a hole for a post or something i use my gerber LMF II

 

How do you like that beast? I have been pondering over buying the LMF.

 

If any one is wanting the LMF II get it.....its a freakin amazing knife. the sheath is borderline bomb proof and is capable of many different configurations. the sheeth also has a built in sharpener. knife its self is very durable and holds a edge great. the knife metal is very hard but wont chip or crack. grip is comfortable and has 3 holes to aid in the process of lashing it to a stick for a spear. knife is also a full tang. only thing i dont like is the partial serrations, only because i dont like serrations on my knife

 

damnit... adding that to my list of supplies..... im gonna be broke... oh wait... I already am...

 

check ebay out i got the asek LMF II for a really good price. the only thing different about the ASEK is the fact it come with a belt cutter. It stands for Airman Survival and Egress Knife.
