Big fan of the XD's. The best way is to go to a range and rent several to see what you like.
I had a $1200. Browning that I thought shot like a dream till I picked up my XD. Is it a better gun, doubt it, but I love the way it fit's my hand and am able to keep it on target.
Best way to pick a firearm it to shoot a bunch and buy what feels good to you.

You also need to consider, is this for protection, plinking and so on. If this is your first gun, you might consider a wheel gun.

Try a few out, and see what fits you the best. Between the glock and the xdm I chose the xdm cuz it just felt better to shoot for me, others feel different. Smith M&P does have ambi slide and mag releases.

My father was a fan of the Glock when he was in the police force, but now he uses a Springfiled XDM and loves it. Shoots extremely well plus you can change the butt plate to fit the size of your hands.

First let me say that I can't thank you and your family enough for your service to this country. That being said, I will have to respectfully disagree with your statement. The mindset that 9mm isn't adequate enough is an old wives tale that stems from WW2 era, and even in todays wars due to them using FMJ. Any 9mm with at least a 3.5" barrel shooting a quality, proven H.P is more then enough to take a man down. That coupled with the fact most will be more accurate on the initial shot, as well as the follow up shot if necessary makes 9mm a very viable option opposed the the 45.

I own both, and prefer to carry the 9mm as that is what I am most accurate with. I have no problem trusting my families life, as well as mine with the 9mm platform. Don't get me wrong, the 45 is a good round, and will do more damage, but just not a big enough margin for me.

Agreed - probably the best advice. what feels good to you may be different from everyone else. Some pistols come with different backstraps to fill your hand a little differently. Something that feels good in the store may really be uncomfortable after putting 10 or 15 rounds through it.

I've got a Sig in .40, and it fits me like a dream - I really lucked out since I sort-of inherited it. It comes in 9mm, and it's something to consider. New though, it's out of your price range.

Dont' forget gunbroker.com for some occasional deals.

I carry the Beretta PX4Storm .45, hence the screen name. Which is a little bigger than what you want, but my wife carries the PX4Storm 9mm compact. The 9mm compact is $550 and the full size is $650. If you need something even smaller Beretta also makes the PX4 Type F, which is a subcompact. We both love them. I have also owned Sig's that are pretty unstoppable. You really need to feel each one in your hand to determine the best fit for you.

Foglights are for fog, not oncoming traffic!
Stick with the 9...modern ammo properly placed will do anything that a 40 or 45 will.
I second CZ75...possibly the best 9mm platform there is.
    High quality and accuracy.
    Steel construction has it's benefits.

I like my Springfield XD 9MM. Rounds are cheap too on 9MM so it's fun to shoot and doesn't drain the bank.

    Check out my sig...
Agreed... Gotta try them out. First CCW was a G23 - loved it until I got my Kimber 1911. Sold the Glock and got an XD since it felt similar to a 1911 (grip angle, especially compared to the glock). Got rid of the XD 3 mos later and still rocking the 1911 (too bad I live in the RepubliK of CA and can't get a FRICKING CCW! - not yet at least).

Due to ammo prices Im looking at a 9mm too - mainly at a 1911 platform, PX4storm, FNX9, and browning.

I have a CZ P01 which is a 75 compact. This gun is awesome. NATO proven, super accurate, extremely comfortable...

    Consider looking into CZ's.

I just bought a Glock 19 4th gen a few months ago. I really like it. It's a small gun with 15 in the clip so it's fun to rapid fire. My dad bought a Taurus 45 it was cheaper and it really didn't kick much harder than my 9. The 4th gen fit my wifes hands really well to, so she's shoots it with ease.
