'11, ipod adapter?

I have read several threads about the ipod adapters & it seems that the '11 radio differs from prior years.

I have the regular standard radio system in my 2011 & am looking for suggestions for a good quality adapter, that charges the ipod & allows use of the steering wheel controls, along with the best sound. I know that there is a input port on the dash, but that's all I know about it.

    thanks!

The Toyota/OEM iPod adapter works. Steering wheel controls work. Sounds good. It charges, handles playlists, etc. Works on an old iPod as well as a new model 64GB iPod Touch, so no model limitations. Older iPod connections emulated a CD-Changer. The new model iPod box emulates a satellite radio connection. The parts guy at the dealer asked year and asked if I had the SR5 option. Not sure what matters, but there are different part numbers for different Tacoma model years (and maybe models).

Grom did not work for me, but as I posted earlier, the OEM unit does in my non-JBL 2011.

What choices are available for a 2011 TRD with JBL? From the above, if the SAT tuner is integrated into the head unit does that eliminate all options? I'd like a hardwired unit that displays song, artist, etc. on the head unit, but haven't asked the dealer about the OEM iPod kit, or if any aftermarket kits work with the new JBL units.

I just picked up a USA Spec PA15-Toy for my 2011 with JBL. No issues at all the install took about 10 min. You can use your steering wheel controls and still control your music through you ipod or iphone.

Lee, I saw where you were selling another kind of adapter, so it looks like you have done the homework already for me here in Deland. My '11 Taco was built 9/10 & again has the no-frills standard radio. I can just walk in & order the OEM adapter from my local dealer? What does the product look like? Is removing the HU required to connect it? I thought I read somewhere that there was a connection in the glovebox, I removed it, but could not see anything that looked like a connection. I found a link about removing the HU, doesn't appear to be too difficult, if required for the OEM. What should this cost from the dealer? Thanks!

The part number above (I think) is just for a replacement cable.

I have a 2011 double cab, prerunner, V-6, SR5 with the non-JBL, single CD player. I don't know that any of that except the year matters, but just in case....

The part number for the whole kit is 00016-00117, Accessory code R140. My local dealer (Toyota of Melbourne) charged me $160.07 + $9.61 in FL tax for a total DIY out the door cost of $169.68 on 6 April 2011. The kit contents include Main module (about 2"X2"X1"), main power harness, iPod cable, hardware bag, and information card. The hardware bag contains two 25" cable ties, a foam mounting pad, a grommet, and six 8" cable ties. The dealer printed out the install instructions, and I still have them if you can't obtain them wherever you buy a unit (I would offer them now, but would have to scan them in etc. - willing to do that, but only if needed please).

The radio has to come out as the main power harness attaches at the rear of the headunit. They give you the two 25" cable ties since they expect the main module to be installed to the beam behind the radio. I didn't do this since it would require taking the headunit out if there was ever a problem. Instead I pulled my glovebox down a bit and installed it on top of the glovebox using some velcro (there's plenty of wire to install in several places).

I'm very happy with the OEM box. It plays all the songs on an iPod or iPhone (at least I've tried with three different iPods and a 3GS iPhone). You can set up multiple playlists in iTunes as well as playing by Artist, Album, Genre, Songs, or in manual. In manual it acts like an "Aux in" and the iPod has to be manipulated.

I also tried the Grom, you sort of reference it. I really wanted it to work since it can remember up to 4 USB memory sticks or HDDs. But I could never get it to reliably switch the text between artist/album/title, etc. If I had an older Tacoma I would probably go with the Grom, but for 2011 Tacoma the Toyota product is Apple certified.

Lee, thanks for the quick reply & all the great info. Even though OEM stuff is usually higher priced, most of it is pretty good & I am glad to go with it. I'll be ordering one on Monday. We are Social Security age so we can barely figure out how to use the ipod, so this is all new to me. I needed the help.

You say you are almost all Toyota, well.... Just one 'Yota in our stable (though my wife put 150K miles on an '81 Tercel), others are my wife's new MX-5 Miata, '72 Datsun 510 (my daily driver), a MK-2 Tiger for 38 years, 1940 Ford Street Rod, & a Dodge Caravan.

Thanks to all that replied to this thread.

I'm not far behind you (two years away). From your vehicles it seems like you still know how to have fun (well, except for the Caravan part ;)).

Regarding the iPod - I can't begin to tell you how dumb that thing makes me feel. I've owned (and disposed of) an Apple IIE, several Macs, the iPod, my daughter uses an iPhone - and while I have been a Unix system administrator and used PCs for literally decades - the Apple operating system gestalt escapes me.

Anyway, it took me the longest time to figure out how to produce a quasi-random order of all the songs on the iPod (I have 6829 in iTunes). Here's my way (although probably not the right way): In iTunes on the PC create a playlist with all the songs, click on the column to sort by track # at the top of the list (might first have to make the track # visible by right clicking on the column title bar). Turn on "Shuffle" at bottom left. Then click on the numbered column at the top, far left of the song list (have no idea what it's called). The song listing should now appear to be in a random order. Then you right click on the playlist name and select the menu option "Copy to Play Order". It will then adjust the iPod to play that playlist in this pseudo-random order - allows you to go through all the songs without repeat, while still "shuffling". Hope that made some sense.

    Lee,

I took your advice & installed the OEM ipod-adapter this morning, luckily one of the bigger 'Yota dealers had them in stock. They could not find the installation instructions on their PC, but it was so simple I didn't need them. Removed HU, figure out which plug looks like the plugs on the adapter wiring & unplug it from the HU. The adapter plug goes in the HU in it's place & the original harness plug goes back into a female adapter plug of the new harness. Routed the wiring to the glove-box & attached one of those clear vinyl pocket-protectors for a sleeve to slide the ipod into. Works great! Biggest concern was removing the HU on a brand new 2300 mile vehicle, but there is a picture tutorial here on this site, of a young lady with large breasts showing us how. I'm happy, thanks for the help!

From the research I'v done, there is no way for an ipod adapter to work for a JBL equipped truck. I'v looked into all the units. OEM doesn't work as they work the same way aftermarkets work by emulating SAT radio. I just ended up paying for for a years with for SAT radio for $115. I was not satisfied with not having any control of the ipod though the vehicle has I'v had in many other previous vehicles.
