    Hey everyone.
I currently own a 2005 subaru WRX wagon. It was fun, but I don't race or autocross it at all. My wife and I have talked about getting a pickup for a while now. One of my local used car dealerships has a 2005 tacoma 4x2 prerunner v6, 85000 miles. They want 14700 for it. I have a few questions.

Is that a good price, I obviously will try to negotiate with them. What price should I look to get it for.
Also, is the gas mileage really that bad? I mean, it doesn't seem much worse then what I get in my wrx in the city. I'm lucky to get 18 to 20 mpg in the city. And that's with babying it. and 99% city driving. Some of that is on a stretch thats not stop and go and 30 to 45 mph

Is there anything in particular I should look for that may have gone wrong or will need fixed soon? The AC doesn't work, so I already told them that before I buy it they will either have to have that fixed, or we will be lowering the price.

    Oh, and Hi.

EDIT. Heres a link to it. http://www.autotrader.com/dealers/dda/detail.jsp?dealer_id=4671930&ct=u&car_id=295362249

if you're serious about a tacoma i would pass on that one. Find one close to immaculate with less miles and possibly 4x4 if needed in your area. It took me 2 months to find the tacoma i wanted and i drove 5 hours.

prerunners can get 20-21 highway at 55mph
    4x4 can get 19-20 highway at 55mph

    i get about 18-19 mixed.

I also say pass. Personally I'm not a fan of dealerships. The mileage isnt bad for an '05, the lower the better but toyotas run forever. Are you particular about anything, package, color etc.? How long have you been looking? Also, go with your gut, if you're unsure, you should probably walk away,

I'm pretty particular on what I am looking for. I want an 05+ tacoma prerunner v6 auto with low miles and the double cab with 5ft bed, trd off road package. I'd like red, but color doesn't have to be a certain one.

The dealer where i found this one offered me 12k for my car today, which is actually ALOT more then I thought they would.

my budget is somewhere between 12k and 15k. I'm trying to keep from having a car payment. I know that finding one used with low miles for that price will be hard.

What makes you guys/gals say to pass on this one, is it the mileage? Keep in mind my budget is 12k-15k. I cant really afford a newer one with less miles, cause they are out of my budget.

I say pass only because I don't like dealerships. If your ok with purchasing one from a dealership and this is the truck you want, go for it, but if it's not perfect, wait. I was extremely particular about the truck I wanted and it took a ton of patience to find the perfect one, but I am so happy I waited. I wouldnt worry about the mileage. Things i'd consider are, the condition of the body, the paint, tires, brakes, the interior, number of previous owners. Don't jump on it because it's in your price range, there will plenty more.

Why do you want the Pre-Runner TRD off-road package?

Now, I don't want to flare up the nascent pre-runner vs. 4x4 debate that's always right below the surface here. But you personally should consider carefully what you really want. Pre-Runners can be a fine choice. But unless you're into the SoCal desert running scene, many folks who want to go off-roading eventually find the lack of 4WD to be limiting.

If after considering, you decide that is in fact what you want then by all means don't eliminate this one. 85000 miles isn't bad for a 6 year old car. But condition is king in used cars and we can't really assess that based on the auto-trader ad.

One thing to check - it's more common than you'd like for folks to slap on a TRD off-road sticker and call it an 'Off Road' - be sure to check that it has the TRD seats and the locking differential.

Based on Edmunds.com, looks like the dealer's charging a full-ticket-ride price. You might find a better price private party, if you wait a bit. Or soften him up on price if you can.

Definitely don't accept *anything* wrong with the truck at that price.

I recently traded in my 04 WRX towards a 2011 4 x 2 Taco. Even though I miss the turbo and the handling I wouldn't go back. I love my taco! You probably won't find anything low mileage, and with the options you want in your price range, but the good news is if it has been well maintained they will go forever. The downside, at least when your purchasing, is they also hold their value like no other truck, so finding them cheap with anything under 100K is very tough. It was important for me to go new because I have a moderate length commute to work, and I plan on keeping my truck for 10+ years. Good luck with your future purchase.

I dont really need the trd off road package. I thought the locking rear diff might be nice for days when we get alot of snow, but I could probably get by without it.
My wrx is paid off now, paid it off this morning, and actually have a guy willing to buy it from me for kbb price. 14000.

so that along with the 5 grand I have should actually give me about 19000 to spend.

The dealership my dad works at has an 08 double cab trd sport package with 80000 miels on it. Gonna see what they can do on it price wise.

yea, not getting this one either. It's been smoked in and apparently it's obvious.

If you don't need a 4x4 all the time, I would pass on it and stick to a 2WD. Especially with gas going the way it is.

The Tacoma is about to get redesigned for 2013 (somebody correct me if I'm wrong). So there is bound to be some great deals coming through, be it people wanting to get the new design or dealers trying to clear out the old design.

So the dealer that this truck is at that has been smoked in offered to do something to the truck for me.

They offered to put leather seats in it, to get rid of the smoke smell and burns in the fabric seats, offered to replace all the carpet, and offered to do some ozone treatment to it to get rid of the smoke smell, and do all that for 1500 bucks less then the current price they are asking, so basically 19000

My question. should that get rid of the smoke smell?
