Medano Pass 5-22-11

It was a nice easy trail and very scenic. Had a great time with 06rubi and his friends.

What happened with all the trees?? Looks like a fire, but was it controlled, or a wildfire?

I was there in 07 and ran Medano Pass, and it looked completely different with all of the trees sprouted out. Saw a couple blackbear as well.
Kinda disappoints me to see it that way, as I was wanting to go back this year...

 

It was a wildfire that stated by a lightening strike on June 6th of last year. Ironically that was the last time I wad on the trail. My wife saw the smoke but we didn't think much of it. The forest service decided to let it burn. I think it burnt around 60 acres, but I'm not to sure. I was surprised to see that much destroyed. It was a nice fall trail to see the aspens change their colors too.

 

6000 acres. Just ran it last weekend and there is lots of new veg regeneration. Cool place.

 

I'm trying to convice to wife to drive down there from Southern Metro Denver. How long does is take to get there from Colorado Springs?

If you took 115 down from Springs I'm guessing 2-2 1/2 hours.

 

We did Medano Pass on Saturday, stayed at the camp grounds at the foot hills of the Sand Dunes that night and did Hayden Pass on the way home. Medano was really fun/beautiful but nothing really challenging. Hayden Pass was a challenge. We went from Villa Grove to Coaldale and going up from Villa Grove was tough. Drove most of it in 4 low with the rear end locked. Some challenging spots and very rocky. Going from Coaldale to Villa Grove would be tougher because it's very steep and rocky on the Villa Grove side. Can't get my photos up but will try to soon.

 

Glad to see the whole area isn't burned down from the fire of yesteryear.

Hayden pass is pretty fun. Hmmmm maybe I'll head up there next weekend.
