UCA removal

I just purchased a set of LR UCA's and took a look at my current ones today. The cotter pin that goes through the castle nut that holds the uca to the spindle is completely sheared off on both sides, so the pin itself is still inside. Also the castle nut is kinda stripped already, and rusted to hell. Is there a way I could remove my old uca without having to sit there and try to knock the cotter pin out and work on getting that castle nut off? I'm wondering if just cutting that bolt will work.

Do you have a drift pin punch? That will knock the cotter pin right out.

 

I don't have a drift pin punch, I just tried the socket + breaker bar idea and the whole bolt + castle nut spins together so I'm not getting anywhere. Thinking of just shearing that bolt in half and pulling it apart.

Just use a punch...or even a nail or a small screwdriver.

 

Get out the sawzall or grinder and cut er off trying to free it now is a major PITA. Once the balljoint is cut you can remove the uca no problem then u can just heat up the spindle and beat out the remaining balljoint.

 

Air tools.

An impact gun should have enough torque to spin the nut off the threads even if the shaft is spinning.

An impact is definitly worth a shot, the worse that will happen is it all spinning as one.

 

Ok bro , heres your fix, take a small sledge (or other heavy hammer) & hit the UCA right where the ball joint goes in, hit the UCA (not ball joint) 3 or 4 hard !!








Now turn the castle nut upside down & thread it until the stud is just short of being flush with nut, hit it a couple times lightly, THERE ITS OUT !!! & your welcome !!!

 

Shit, just re read your post, so is cotter suck? get a 8 or 16 penny finish nail & knock it through. if ball joint still in UCA then hit it like I said above...

Is the nut in good enough shape to get a wrench on it? You may be able to use the nut to shear off the rest of the pin as it removed.

 

Wooh dang lots of ideas haha thanks. Tried the impact idea today and it just spun. You could say the bolt and the castle nut are basically one now with all that rust in there. I'm going to try cutting and banging it out once my new ones arrive.

 

This sounds like a job for a sawzall or an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel.

 

Be sure to have lots of blades on hand if using a sawzall.
