Help diagnosing problem

Ok My 2002 v6 pre-runner has a issue but I'm not sure what it is. I want to know whats going on before i take it in just in case the mechanic tries to rip me off

History- I got the truck from my mom (deceased) and since I took it over it had this problem, unknown how long its had the issue

Problem 1 - when driving and not accelerating the is a high pitched noise
Problem 2 - when I come to a stop the truck jolts. I thought it could be a axle seal, but no sign of grease on any axle, So I thought maybe a motor mount but the ones I can see seem ok. is it a transmission thing?

For your first problem, check the simple stuff. I'd start with making sure you have life left in the brake pads. How loud of a noise is it? Also, not sure if this applies to first gens, but grease the driveline if you can.

The second, try taking the transmission out of the equation, put it in neutral and come to a stop the way you normally would and see if it still jolts. The results of this should at least help narrow the search.

 

not sure about problem #2 but could be a solenoid problem in the trans. Problem number #1 could be a bad wheel bearing or try greasing the drive shaft joints.

 

That's a good idea I'll try that (idle). I'll also grease all the drive train.

UPDATE - I tried the stopping in neutral and the jolt thing didn't happen. Does this mean something with the tranny? I also Greased the drivetrain, changed the oil/filter, changed the a/c.alternator, and power steering belts, and spark plugs.

 

problem 1 sounds like a front wheel bearing like Eric said, how many miles on the truck? Question on the second problem, is it like a clunking sound when you stop? I have a 1st gen taco and you have to grease the drive shaft good and purge the universal joints once in a while or you will hear that clunking when you stop.

 

I greased the drivetrain but I'll check the again today and try to purge, dont really hear a noise though.

 

It might be axle wrap for prob.#2

The auto shop teacher at a local high school seems to think its the tranny and he said my tranny fluid is dirty to have it flushed. But I'm not sure how great of a mechanic he is

 

If you don't have maint. records for the truck, it is cheap insurance to swap out all the fluids. If the tranny fluid isn't a nice, bright red, have it flushed. This is the fraction of the cost for a new transmission, no?

 

How many miles on on the transmission and do you know the history of it (was it used to tow/haul or more of a commuter). I have my doubts whether a transmission fluid flush will solve your problem, I'd be more apt to think it's a solenoid as mentioned above. How does it drive, does it feel like the torque convertor slips or does your shop teacher say anything else to back up his claim, like how he diagnosed it? Who knows, he might be correct and as stated above, a fluid flush is cheaper than rooting through the transmission for problems.

One thing to keep in mind with really high mileage or hard worked vehicles, changing the transmission fluid can sometimes cause more harm than good. Sounds counter intuitive but the grit in the fluid actually becomes what the torque convertor relys on to function. Remove the grit, the fluid is thin again instead of gritty, and it starts slipping like crazy. Please do not take this out of context, I am not telling you not to change your transmission fluid or saying old, worn out fluid is better than a clean flush, just something to be cautious of.

Has 94k miles no history of maintenance, I work for the school and he is not my teacher (I'm 33 years old). He just said the tranny fluid looked a little dirty. I asked him does that mean my tranny is going out? he said no. So I plan on flushing the tranny and doing the axle wrap mod.

 

Didn't check your age, just figured you were in a trade school or something Sounds like a transmission flush couldn't hurt!
