need help about a purchase decision

hey i used to ride/race dirtbikes alot as a kid and i still love it. i am 23 and have a good job and i am married. I am wanting to buy a bike because i havent had one for a couple of years. But the catch is that my wife and family dont think i should because i have responsibilities. I not going to ride it like i stole i just want something to ride. Any thoughts ???

 

Dude sorry I'm with the family, if all is taken care of... well thats another story. It's not like your going through you mid life crisis yet.

just kidding.. just one thing if you do get one, and have time to ride just remember they might throw it in your face if the responsibilities start lacking.. just my 2 cents.

 

Are you talking about a street bike, or one for soley offroad????? if you're discussing a street bike, i defintely get their opinion... soley a dirtbike, doesn't seem like as big a deal. i won't ride a street bike for that same reason...

 

Hey! What kind of bike dude? My KLR gives me 49 miles to the gallon while my O7 Taco barely has hit 36k miles. Get the bike is what I say. Do you have kids? If so, they come first. Those suckers cost money.

 

agree with your wife, it's not if but when you get hit, been there done that. Drivers simply do not see motorcycles. i was victim to the famous someone turning left into me, major road rash leg and arm, i was 54 years old at the time, lucky nothing broke took it as a warning shot and sold all 4 of my vintage Triumph,s. IMO.....

family is right. you have responsibilities first.

 

For recreation, I'd say go for it but I think it's something you should get your whole family involved with. That way, everyones happy.

I just want to be clear about your family's concerns. Are they worried about your safety? (It's not IF you'll crash, but when.) Or are they concerned that you'll spend too much time and energy on the moto and neglect your domestic obligations? Both? If you have the free time and money, I say go for it, but also agree with tommyc... make sure the family and home responsibilities get their due attention and all should be happy. Everyone needs a hobby and if you are ready to rediscover your love for dirt bikes, your family will surely want you to be happy. Strive for balance, on the bike and in life.

Family comes first. I too am married, and ride. I know the risks. My wife knows the risks. She is OK with me riding. First time she says she isnt, its time to knock it off, or work with a compromise. That is what I signed up for with marriage - she(and family) deserves at least that much respect and consideration. Keep your priorities straight. Get into MTB or something if you need that 2 wheel rush.

Otherwise, enjoy! Its a blast, and a whole different type of traveling, and nothing is like it.

"loud pipes save lives" - the battle cry of the bandanna wearing ignorant. Guess what? - that semi driver cant hear them until you are ahead of them. Neither can the 30 year old mom with kids yelling in the back seat. Or the 25 year old Tacoma driver with the radio turned up.

Helmets, gear, education, defensive riding, attentive-ness, experience, and the right mindset save lives. Sometimes nothing does. One of the risks...

"dont move fast" - What is fast? a Goldwing is still speedier than any factory car (save maybe a very few) under $70k... Talk about big and noticeable.

And WTF is a "suicide bike"? Another gem from the a) uneducated b) misinformed. A sport bike (not a crotch rocket, unless you dont ride em) is just as safe as any other bike, in the hands/under the control of a competent, able rider. It is the idiots that ride anything (yes, they ride Harleys too...) that make motorcycles dangerous, annoying, and give the rest of us a bad name. Along with all the cagers.

Oh yeah - I dont have a sportbike. I do have a HUGE cruiser, and a sport touring bike (every bike with a plastic fairing is not a "suicide bike").

i am talking dirtbikes and i dont want to race i just want to hit trails and things kinda use it as my stress reliever. I certainly would not neglect any of my responsibilities. My wife is simply worried about me getting hurt because my job is physically demanding climbing stairs etc. I am tossed on the whole thing....

Its not IF but WHEN you crash.....WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP......

A VERY small percentage of riders have a get off ....VERY small.

5 Million riders 100K will have a get off, 5000 will die, Well over 50% will be due to alcohol, speeding, stunting, inexperience, and the fault of rider alone. a few will be vehicle contacts. Very few. and they can be mitigated with bright clothing and modulators, Most wrecks are the riders fault. Even at that less than 1% per year will get injured riding through no fault of their own.

If you want to ride Get a mid range cruiser and just do it. I have been riding for decades and never had a get off and I ride with shorts and no gear. I don;t take chances, I don;t test my limits or the bikes. I put more miles on my bike than my truck per year. I prefer riding, less expensive, saves wear and tear on the far more expensive truck, easy to park on and on.......Helps that I live in an area where snow is rare.

JUst do it....Don't allow other to project their fear to you...

The day I get on my bike believing for a nano second I will be injured is the day I stop riding......or worse ni IF but When....LOL

I don't know how some people leave their places of residence each day with all the risk taking outside those doors. Contrary to popular (but ignorant of the facts belief) ,

[U OTHER ]VEHICLES are NOT the MAIN problem for motorcyclists [/U] Motorcyclists on any kind of bike are their OWN worst enemy by a much larger percentage.
