Well you have to remember that the gearing is lower to get the same effect as a larger torqued engine, plus the speed limits on most of the freeways are 65 to 75 mph. I also have some hills to navigate to get out of the Las Vegas valley. I try to not mash the pedal nor speed from traffic light to traffic light. But to enter many of the freeways does require getting up to speed with some urgency to merge, as many drivers have no consideration to allow a vehicle to enter the freeway.

I'm friggen sick of driving for 7 hours or so on a tank. I dont want to stop till I get to a gas station, but crap, at 24-25 mpg , I guess sacrifices have to be made.

Auto or manual... I say test drive them both, but buy what you like. As far as I heard , neither have any real issues.

ps Canadians like to piss americans off with false kilometers per liter claims.... the air is so cold and dense up there, how could they get better mpg:D

I just went from an 05 18mpg 4 cyl 5 speed AC prerunner with lift and 275/65/18s on it to an 08 SR5 prerunner reg cab 5 speed with buckets/console with no lift and 245/75/16s on it. On the first tank now. Hoping to get at least 25mpg from it. I did test drive a 2011 4wd reg cab automatic while at dealer because it is the only way to get buckets and console in reg cab nowadays and was curious how it'd move. I'm gonna have to advise against the automatic in a 4wd or AC or DC with 4 cyl. That thing was worse than trying to push my lifted E load big tire AC around with the 5 speed runnning the air conditioner, it just wouldn't go without ending up in passing gear. Felt like it couldn't get out of it's own way, didn't like it (except for the cool gauge faces & zero miles). Maybe others can deal with it tho.

Picked my kayak up in bend,OR today. Up Mt. Hood n all the mountain driving stuff, 355 miles round trip, got 24.6 mpg. Still had 1/4 left roughly. Was going 60+/_ mph average overall, so it isnt like its a benchmark or anything. Still nice to me though.

Don't forget that the Imperial gallon (4.546 liters) is larger than the US gallon (3.785 liters). I see these elevated MPG from time to time and need to be kept in perspective.
