Backup camera install w/o wiring harness

If I were to have an OEM backup camera and mirror display, would it be possible to wire it up without the wiring harness? Has anyone done this on a 08- tacoma without the harness?

Any help would be appreciated!

It's not wireless, so I would assume the harness is necessary.

If you have access to the connectors and are willing to run wires, then certainly it can be done without the harness. Probably wouldn't hurt to have the wiring diagrams so you can tell which wire goes where.

 

the connectors are exposed, but I was just trying to figure out how I would connect the pins to the wire without the harness plug.

 

You need the plugs. Mine is all aftermarket to the head unit, so no need to buy the Toyota stuff. I bought a pop and lock and modified it to accept a cheap ebay camera i found.

 

kinda confusing.. I would assume that with some cat-5 cable and the wires on the correct pins that it would work without the oem plug. I'm just interested to see if anyone has done this. And in some cases that I've seen, other members have had the harness, but it just goes as far as the spare tire then they ran wire from there to the cab. So I would think it would work without it. right?

 

Oh it will work, you just got to figure out the pinout on the camera and the mirror.

 

Ive seen a callout for all the wire color values. Does anyone have a picture or a schematic of which pin goes to which wire color?

I gave up searching and shelled out the $15 for access to the diagrams for two days. I have a DNX-7140 attached to a cheap camera in my 07. I got a stock camera and a pop and lock handle. Anyway the information is in the PDF. It should be fairly straightforward now since I know what wire goes to what pin on the tailgate. I'm hoping to pick up some sort of connector at RS to allow me to slip each wire over the pin on the camera.

 

Derrick, I've seen that thread he has a harness for the install but it was also very helpful. Jbboater, thank you! That is exactly what I've been searching for. This should be very easy with that diagram.

 

I actually just installed my back up camera two weeks ago with out the harness on my 07 double cab. I installed a aftermarket head unit and bought the tailgate handle off ebay and got some cat-5 cable made to be ran underwater, so very well weatherproofed. I work on electronics, as I am a Electronics Technician in the Navy, and got some pin extenders that slided on the pins in the camera very snug, soldered those. From there, I ran the cat-5 cable and took the reverse lights power to the camera and soldered all the connectors. I have all the pins if you still need them. It worked out really well and havent had any problems yet.

 

has anyone ever installed the OEM backup camera/rear view mirror that comes with the post '09? I would really like to install this on my '05 taco

they have another kit without the mirror which I got since I have a reverse camera input on my head unit

 

thanks Muisejt, I was also looking at a head unit, the ANI-W910, I'm not sure I like the camera they have with it though, would prefer the pop lock tailgate one, is this the one you used with your head unit?
