THE PLASTI-DIP MEGA THREAD!!!!!!

1st Gen: Okay so you know that piece of window trim/weather strip that always cracks and chips and shows the chrome underneath? Yeah well I was sick of that. So today I took em off and plasti-dipped them. Decided to do a write up because I know it bugs alot of people and not everyone wants to spend $35 at the stealership for new ones. This is my first write up so cut me some slack...

First your gonna need to pull off that piece of black trim on the inside of the door. Its held in place by one little snap, but it wont break, its not like those ones on your door. Pull from the top and she'll pop right off.


Next your left with three 10mm nuts. Use a wrench because the door panel gets in the way of using a socket. Be sure to hold the mirror when you finishing with the last nut because that will be the only thing holding it from falling and yanking on the harness for the window motor(if you have one) or crashing to the ground(if you dont have one).


Next unplug the quick disconnect so that its out of your way.



Ugh its so ugly!


Now just slide the trim over a little so that it doesn't get caught up on the other trim.


Now, this is one of the most important parts. The clips. You don't wanna break the clips. So, the first one(closest to the door handle) is about an inch or two away from the end of the trim. Your gonna wanna pull straight up right above that spot. the last 2 clips are about 5 or 6 inches to the left for each. Repeat the process for those. I went into this blind and just pulled up in the center, it came flying off and luckily the clip popped off but didnt break, it went back on no problem. Dont rely on it doing that for you.



Now you gotta clean up the surface your gonna paint(plastidip). I used a handy little window scraper I had laying around in the garage. Came in real handy, but an exacto knife can work too. This little tool made getting off the old cracking rubber a breeze .




Masking is the next step. You know, I still cant really think of a really important reason why you need to mask, but it seems like a good idea and cant hurt anything, so just suck it up and do it. BTW, this next pic looks like I already sprayed them cuz of the lighting, I didnt though. But do make sure you sand it or something to scuff it up a bit. The plasti-dip doesnt say you have to but rule of thumb tells me to. Its your choice I guess. You do have to clean it though. Just wipe it off with a damp rag.


Now its time to spray. For those who dont know, Plasti-Dip can be bought at Lowes for $6.95. I'm sure ou can find it at just about any hardware store though. Anyways, shake the can real well. Dont want any blotchy spots. I did 4 coats. I would reccommend the same because its gonna be exposed to alot of light, heat and water obviously so your gonna want it kinda thick. 1st coat is always light. They progressively get thicker each coat. Dont go too thick though, it will start to run. Learn that happy medium between too thin and too thick. Its not hard. Read the back of the can.

Go clean the area behind hte trim in the meantime while you wait for it to dry.

3rd Coat

4th Coat


Let the last coat dry for like an hour in the shade or 30 minutes in the sun before you put it back on. If you just hold the actual rubber weather stripping and not the part you plasti-dipped, you really dont have to touch it. Nobody wants smudges

That piece is called a Belt Moulding. Mine looked just like yours. I went online to alot of parts stores Toyota is the only place to get them. I was thinking of plasti- dipping mine but went instead to toyota got both of mine for $59.14. When you look at a new one it looks like it was plasti-dipped probably was.

 

so plasti dip leaves it a flat color? do yall think that if i plasti dipped my wheels then coated it with a few layers of clear that it would still peel off? i dont want a flat finish on my wheels. and this is on my x runner so it dont get any offroad action.

I noticed if it's windy, the paint will dry unevenly. Try doing it inside your garage.

 

I did do it inside my garage, thanks for the tip though. Maybe I'm just expecting too much out of it?

 

I use plastidip for what is was originally made for. dipping your tools in it for a nice grip while wrenching.

did you sand before spraying?

 

You dont have to sand when using plasti-dip.. just clean the surface. And OP.. don't blame the product, i've used it on tools, chrome wheels, chrome trim on my mustang, chrome grilles, and a bumper. Trust me, you effed up somewhere along the process. Just take gasoline and a powerwasher to take it off and re-do it.

 

Sand down the grill ( 300 or so grit) prime with good dupli color primer (gray) and paint with dupli color 040. bet you like it. Jim

Been wanting to do mine for a long time, but i'm scared of messing it up.

 

when i did my bumpers and grille it came out splotchy so all i did was spray another few thinner coats from further away and with longer swipes and now it looks good and even

 

Mine came with 040 grill but I did help out kid from down the street paint his grill on his 05 taco. Take the grill off wipe down with clean rag and gas to get the wax off. Tape off the center and go for it. Most people are in to big a hurry, take your time and do light coats it will come out good. Or find a old cat down the street and ask for help. Jim

 

I just got my son a polaris atv power wheels and it has really bad traction, so i was thinking instead of getting rubber tires just spray the plastic ones with plasti dip, since ive never used it i dont know the consistency of it, is it a good idea or bad idea

 

Don't believe it will stick if your your going to try to use it for traction. Looks, then yeah it will stick. But as soon as it grabs on blacktop it will tear it off. Plasti dip isn't a thick rubber coating.
