I was wondering if I have a TRD OR with an e-locker...how would putting a LSD up front drive?

I thought about the ARB air locker (an auto locker is not going up front for me)...but I think the LSD would be better (and cheaper)...concern is how it would change the driving in rain/snow/turning? Thanks.

2009 and newer Off Road 4WD Tacomas have:

TRAC (automatic limited slip on the front and rear in high range 4WD) and it workes very well... I am comparing to my 2 previous 4WD Off Road Tacomas without limited slip (traction control). I could drive over deep sand with my 2010 that would require deflating my tires on non-TRAC Tacomas.

A-TRAC (automatic 'locking' on the front and rear in low range). If a tire begins to spin (because it is in the air, on ice, soft surface), the A-TRAC matches its rotation to the opposite tire on that axle allowing the power to be used by the traction tire. Even if just one (including the front) tire has traction and the other three are in the air or on ice, etc., the A-TRAC will pull the truck ahead.

On trips with my older trucks where I used the rear locker to climb steep, rocky grades, I have used the A-TRAC and the truck performed better. I have had other experiences where A-TRAC extracted my truck in bad situations. Give it a good try-out before investing more $$$ for a front locker. One nice advantage to the A-TRAC (besides it not costing anything extra on the Off Road TRD) is that the steering in not affected... You don't have to keep turning it off to make tight turns on the trail... It is on standby, and only goes into action when a tire looses traction.

The e-locker is there, but with A-TRAC it is un-necessary for traction. The locker and the A-TRAC only work in low range. In high range, you do have limited slip TRAC on all 4 tires. TRAC in high range really works well. The guys who have SPORT TRDs do the 4-Low Trac (yellow wire) mod to get TRAC to work in low range and found the limited slip to really improve the truck's abilities.

Good luck, and hang on to your money until after getting your Off Road TRD and seeing how the truck performs!:D

With the exception of recovery gear, and maybe sliders, I recommend no one make an off roading mod until they've been on at least one run where it would have been useful.

About 3 months ago I was looking into getting a lsd/locker and when I called Auburn they said they didn't have any plans to make one for our trucks...yet. That would be awesome to have something like that, almost the best of both worlds!

Typing slower does not affect how a person will read your post. People do not touch the switches in my truck. Are your switches a nice, pretty blue with a label on it that says "Please flip when going 40 mph and and turning in a mud pit!"? Once this person learns not to drive like a dumbass or whatever you're saying, they will probably break less things and still have the added traction of the ARB locker still.

Hey guys, I think the OP is planning mods on a truck he hasn't even purchased yet.

A modicum of caution is in order.

Buy your truck - just use it for a while. If you've got the itch to spend money, start with recovery gear and protective sliders, which can add up quick.

if the truck is a 2009 or newer TRD off road then it will have ATRAC which is pretty much a computer controlled locker

Oh well hell. I was kinda sitting around waiting on them. About a yr. ago there was talk of making one for our trucks I guess that got put to the way side. I hadn't contacted them in a long time as you can tell. Thanks for the update.

I think the guy's point was pretty simple:

Don't buy a locker until you're prepared to know when and how to use it, and when NOT to use it.

Which seems pretty drop-dead obvious, until you see some of the stupid things that people sometimes do. But that would never be a reason not to buy a locker if you needed one, just a reason to do a little appropriate research first.

Hey, yeah, I should have made it clear...don't have a Taco yet...planning so I know I purchase the right one. I'm looking to buy used though.

Doing my research, thanks for all the feedback though!

    Good for you...

2009 + Off Road TRD 4WD Tacomas have:
    a) front and rear 'limited slip' (TRAC)
    b) front and rear 'near 0 slip' (A-TRAC) [I see this as automatic lockers]
    c) rear locking differential (that can operate with A-TRAC active on the front for anytime you lose traction and drop below 4 mph)

You can also de-activate the traction controls and wheel with open differentials (one tire in front and one in the rear spinning away) if you like to do that! You can also have the rear locked and have the front open.

9 drive modes/ choices with the Tacoma Off Road 4WD, 2009 or newer!
