What are the differences?

Generally speaking, What are the differences, whether opinion or fact based, between a .40 cal and a 9mm hand gun.

 

The 40 is bigger with more energy and stopping power.
Ammo cost more for the 40
The 40 usually has a little more recoil
Most people will say to get a 40 for personal defense and I agree.

 

my .40 shoots 165 or 180 gr bullets.

9mm normally shoots 115 to 124 gr bullets.

9MM sux, 40 cal. is cooler. I used to carry a 9, but decided I wanted something a little more powerful, but not a 45. I picked up a XD40SC after trying several different 40 cals.They do have a little more "jump" than the 9, but it doesn't take long to get used to it- if you can't handle recoil, you shouldn't get a gun.

 

because its a bit smaller round, and carries a tad more velocity, 9mm usually achieves better penetration.

 

if my wife, 5" nothing 110lbs, can handle a .40 cal then any grown man should be able to handle it just fine...

 

My wife's Kel tec 380 actually jumps more than my XD40, but the XD won't fit in her small ass purse. I told her to get a bigger purse and I'd get her a bigger gun, but she knows how to use that 380, and where to place the shots.

 

I dont know how the trigger on the kel tec is but on my SW .380 bodygaurd it has a crazy long trigger pul and my wife refused to shoot it bc she felt like she was doing something wrong..."Im pulling it all the way back and it wont shoot"! haha. I shot it fine after a few mags to get used to it.

 

the recoil is harder cause its a smaller lighter gun so it will feel like it wants to jump out of your hand esp since its a smaller profile and less to grip

 

.40 is an answer to a question nobody asked. get a 9mm or 10mm and leave the .40 to the girls.

 

I have a keltec 380, too. My wife hates it. the reason the recoil is worse than the xd, is that the xd is a much heavier, bigger gun. more surface area to grip, and a heavier slide/spring to eat up recoil. but, you can keister the keltec if need be...

And -- since somebody said it -- get a 9mm or 45. 40 is a no man's land round.

Seems like somebody asked it-there's a reason it was developed.
Not everybody can carry a 45 or10MM all day long-especially concealed.

 

We get arrested for that around here.....still old school personal defense in these parts....tire irons and baseball bats!

 

You can't get carry permits/ weapons licenses? I think I'd have to move! I can speak from experience, don't ever pull a tire tool on a guy with a gun...unless you throw it and run.

I carried a Glock 30 for about 2 weeks- I felt like I had a brick in my pocket. I'm too thin to carry a full size comfortably. It did shoot nice, though.

 

IMO, if you want for plinking 9mm will be best because the 9mms ammos are cheaper. for .380 .40mm .45 and .357 ammos cost more and a is a STOPing power.

 

IMO, it's a shit or get off the pot round; be a 9, or a .45. Part of it is the fact that I don't totally buy into this "stopping power" bs. Bseriously? Have you ever been shot? Yes, a 45 will knock a hole in you size of a baseball. A .22 may not exactly have that same power, but it sure still does put a hole in you, and cause end organ damage, which is the desired result. To me, the 9mm is all the stopping power you need, carries a great velocity, and isn't a huge gun like the .45.

Lots of personal preference/opinion here....no research. Just a rant.

 

380 isn't much stopping power, but it's better than the 45 you left at the house. Shot placement is the key regardless of caliber. Even if you choose to carry a 22, make sure you know where to put it.
