using space above the CD player

So I was sick and tired of looking at all the wires running over my dash up to my Sirus and GPS, so I decided to cut into the cover above the CD player and use the space and re-route the wires.

It is pretty simple, and I was able to re-route the wires. I removed one of the covers beside the Aux input, ran all the power wires, Aux and antenna wire through the new opening, behind the climate controls, up to the left of the CD player, and then out above the CD player.

There is a lip above the CD slot where I put some 2 sided tape to hold the Sirus dock in place, and with the GPS wire run behind no more wires over the dash and a clean finish.

Honestly I don't even notice, it is pretty close to the side and its nice and flush.

Its definitely something to add, I personally hate the look of rubber gasket around things. I may sand the whole cover down and paint it black and then it would blend in.

XM reciever inside of the sunglass holder, flip down to change station.


When sunglass holder is closed, out of sight and out of mind.

Does the unit get hella hot in the summer? I know that is why I stopped storing my sunglasses up there since I am not a fan of hot (temp wise) sunglasses.

 

damn. you got balls to be cutting that up. but hey, not bad. i do agree with whippersnapper however, a homemade type of gasket out of an old mudflap or something like that would help with the look in my opinion. but if you said youre happy with it, rock it like it is. very ingenuitive of you.

 

Looks good, I would sand it down and add a rubber gasket if you can find one that looks good to you.

Nah it's always been fine up there, never had an issue. That being said I never really check it since I rarely change stations.

 

Understood, the sad part is you cannot buy just the faceplate, you have to buy a whole radio to make it look factory again. That is gonna cost $$$$$.

Thanks for all the feedback. I am never planning on getting rid of the Tacoma, but if I were it would be after everything went in the truck (ie stereo) so I would need to buy a new surround anyways to go with the deck.

I know I need to clean it up a bit, just need to figure out what is the best method. Most of the cuts are hidden behind the Sirus so its one of those out of sight out of mind things

We all do things that we think would be the best for us, just thought I would give some people ideas and see what kind of conversation or other ideas it would start.

I'm happy with it, + no more freaking wires that hang all over the dash.

 

I love my truck too much to do something like that.

I got tired of seeing the wires for my gps and Sirius being draped up the front of my dash too.

What I did was installed a 3 outlet power port in my glove box and wired it to the fuse panel using an add-a-circuit. I then drilled a hole in the back of the cubby under the cigarette lighter and accessory power ports along with mounting my Sirius receiver there. The hole is directly behind the receiver so now there are no visible wires to my satellite radio. Then, I just routed the power cable to my gps up the passenger side in my dash and ran it along the bottom of my windshield (pushed it down a bit with a putty knife so you can't see it at all) to the center of my dash right below where my gps is located. All you see is a few inches of the power cable where it comes out from between the windshield and the front of the dash to my gps.

Looks pretty clean and now I can use my cup holders again.
