I have been running DT long tube headers on my 2010 DC LB with the stock pipe and Flowmaster American Thunder. All was pretty good but I had the classic rasp at about 2200rpm. This exhaust was perfect for my setup.

I just installed the DT y-pipe with the resonators and the rasp was real bad. Totally annoying. Sounded like crap. The only time it sounds OK is when I am just cruising with no acceleration or my foot is to the floor. Anywhere in between sucks. So, I yanked the American Thunder exhaust and put back on the stock one.

Rasp is barely noticable now. So, I think I have to find another exhaust system or just the muffler and I am hoping someone has the same setup (DTLT Headers and DT y-pipe) so I can hear what you are running.

BTW, after I go the exhaust off I fired it up with just the DT headers and y-pipe and the rasp is there. I did this just to make sure it was not the exhaust.

Ok, I have the DTLT and I had the pipe bomb. If thats the y pipe you have then it sucks. I could never over the year I had it installed get it to seal where it bolted to my exhaust. Plus it was loud and had a bad tone. Don't get me wrong, you could feel the power and i got better mpg by about 1mpg. All in all it wasn't worth it. I sold it and put the factory y pipe back on. love it. FYI, I run a Borla exhaust. Hope it helps.

look at the dynomax vt, might help cut down on the rasp

I think I read your posts about the leaking or another one just like it so when I installed mine I was paying attention to the seal. So, far so good on the pipe seal.

If I continue to find that the stock pipe sounds OK then I hope I can just muffle the rasp out.

I saw that one tonight in my research. Claims drone free. Right now my short list is the aero turbine, dynomax, and Borla. Mainly because all three all straight throw designs and the aero turbine can be had with a built in resonator.

I believe you would want a chambered style muffler. That is the reason you have less rasp with your stock muffler. Maybe go back to your flowmaster and just add a resonator after the exhaust flange and before the muffler.

I put the Banks Monster on and the rasp is gone. I chose their exhaust based on sound clips and the muffler design which is like a huge resonator.

Just to be clear... The AT 2525XL, which is the resonated version, does not have a "built in" resonator. It is simply a resonator made by Aero that is installed when the muffler is. That is why I dont suggest the XL when someone buys the AT, for you are restricted sound-wise to what they want you to do. Also Bobo, if I were guiding your short list, I would get rid of the Borla. Replace it with a Wicked Flows Muffler. I am partial to my Aero Turbine, but I have heard some pretty solid sounding WF mufflers.

EDIT: Failed to realize you already made a choice lol

I'm bringing this back from the dead because I still haven't found a decent muffler for this setup (DT LT headers and pipe bomb y-pipe). The quality is lacking at the welds so of course I had to re-weld some of the joints so there weren't any small exhaust leaks.

At first I mated it up to a JBA exhaust system, which is even worse in quality and the muffler sounds terrible. Then I swapped the muffler with a Magnaflow and it sounded exactly the same. Both JBA and Magnaflow need to clean up their welds, shipping a product with raw welds is bullshit.

I'm thinking about installing a Flowmaster 70 Series now. The LT headers must be tuned for that 2-3k rpm range because they are really moving air in that range. Unfortunately, 70mph is right around 2300rpm so the drone of the JBA and Magnaflow mufflers makes me want to blow my head off. I figure that the 3 chambers of the 70 Series and the massive size of the muffler will get rid of the raspy, Honda cofffe-can sound from 2-3k rpms and eliminate the drone. Nobody will drive anywhere near my truck on the highway because of how terrible it sounds, it's embarrassing to say the least.

Anyone have any success not looking like a jackass when they accelerate past 2k rpms? I'm not going back to stock headers and y-pipe, I just want to find the right muffler to pair up with them.

First get rid of the pipe bomb they should of never made that thing. Put the stock y-pipe back on. What size magnaflow do you have installed? I'm running the dt headers, stock y, and a magnaflow 5x11x22 muffler which sounds very nice and deep. I'd stay away from flowmaster because they all sound crappy.

I was under the impression that the pipe bomb wasnt the cause of the rasp, but that the LT's were. The pipe bomb just increases the volume of the LT's rasp.
Why do you say the pipe bomb isnt worth it? Its a mandrel bent design, so it should technically increase flow. And it raises the ground clearance vs the oem pipe (for those who want full skids). Can you elaborate on why its not worth it?

What's the diameter of the stock y-pipe? Edit: Nevermind, the stock y-pipe has cats, which is a big no-no for my vehicles.

When I bought my truck it already had some gay exhaust on it with dual exits out the back like it was a Ford or some domestic truck. I live up north where they throw a ton of salt down during the winter, so needless to say the entire exhaust was rusted together. I had to cut it off with a saws-all so I went with aftermarket components for the complete system.

Rasp/drone is typical with a straight thru muffler design. A chambered muffler, like some of the Flowmaster lineup, eliminates the rasp/drone but creates back pressure. If I had some sort of forced induction on my truck than I'd care more about back pressure, but when I haul my toys around I want low end torque and a barely audible exhaust.

Maybe I'll replace the resonators with mufflers and have a super quiet truck . . .

I ended up with Banks exhaust with my DT Headers and Y-Pipe and it finally got rid of the rasp and very happy with the sound. If you are concerned about sound level you really need to go back to a stock y-pipe. I just control sound with my foot when I need to be quiet.

No clips at this time. Will see what I can do. Right now I am feeling like sh&t as two hail storms came through yesterday and beat the hell out of my less than a year old (new to me) 09!

Umm . . . The DT Pipe Bomb has dual 10" resonators. You are thinking of the URD Y-pipe, which is straight piping.

I think my only option is to weld in a hi-flow cat. If someone wants to host sound clips, I'll send you different clips of how ridiculous these different setups sound.

    Haha...not doing it...can't make me!
Dude I have the saaame issue! I JUST installed Doug Thorley LTH, Y-Pipe Bomb, and TRD Exhaust and the rasp is bad....REAL BAD. I'm not to concerned about it on the truck, I'm just going to leave it, the response is great and just like you said anything in between is OK.

I did the same thing on my 2010 Nissan 370Z Nismo, Long Tube Headers and Stillen Cat Back....It was so fucking loud I had to remove the headers, and the rasp was just crazy.

I have never had this issue on past vehicles, I am beginning to think it is either 6cyl motors..V, straight, whatever...or the scavenging effect from variable valve timing

Maybe I should get some sound clips up also.

    Haha...not doing it...can't make me!

I think your high flow cat idea is great and will reduce some rasp, but the design itself being high flow just doesn't seem to completely get rid of the rasp...do your homework before you spend the money.
