Spare Tire Question

Hey guys, I just bought 4 17x8" Pro Comp 7089s and realized I did not account for the spare. I will be going with 285/70 R17 Duratracs. For those of you who upgraded your rims and tires, what did you decide to do with the spare? I don't know if I'm ready to drop $375 on the spare so that it can match. What did you do?

I'm thinking of just getting a cheap tire with the same outside diameter as the Duratracs and mounting it on the stock 16" spare; however, one issue might be that the backspacing would not be the same as the pro comp rims.

Your advice would be very appreciated.

do this. it doesnt matter if the backspacing isnt the same since ur just using it as a spare. i dont know if the 285s will fit under the truck though

 

I read that they will with a little fabrication. Apparently, there are a couple brackets that would need to be torched off. I'm worried 285s on the stock spare would cause rubbing on the UCAs without the correct back spacing. Hmmm.

Tell me more. I've been pricing them and as of right now, the cheapest I have found are 4 for $969.51 w/taxes and shipping and handling.

I put a 265/75R16 on the stock spare rim and it fits (barely) in the stock location. That's 1" smaller diam than my mounted tires, but I expect it'll get me back out to the road and to the next town.

 

I have 33's and kept the stock as a spare. It will suffice to get me where I can take care of it properly.

 

Buy a spacer mount it under there with the spare.

 

I pounded the brackets out with a sledge to fit my 285 spare. Mounted it on the stock spare wheel. Only had to run it when Josh got a flat. He of course got a flat up front and it barely cleared. I don't think he could fully turn.

It would be a PITA but you could always rotate a rear up front and mount the spare in the rear if you got a flat up front and your tire wouldn't clear. Save a lot of $$

Could always buy a cheap wheeler's steel wheel with either 4.0 of 4.5 BS and throw a used 16" 285 on that.

 

Yeah, that would be a PITA. Might be worth buying a cheap rim with the right BS and a cheap 33" for it.
