No matter where you work you are not going to start out making a fortune as an 18 year old kid with no college and no eperience. But even back in the day I still made out pretty good. Most of the time I had 3 or 4 uncashed checks in my locker. I lived in the barracks so I didn't have to pay rent and I ate in the mess hall. My TV, VCR, and Stereo System was paid for and my Car payment was taken care of by an allotment. The rest was clear money.

Even after I got married we did pretty good. We lived within our means, so the wife didn't have to work. She was able to stay home with the kids until they started High School.

A friend of mine said one time that before he worked for a company he would look in the parking lot at the cars. That would tell him how well a company paid. Using that standard, just look at the cars in the PX/Commissary Parking lot versus what you see in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

Yeah, I am 22 without any sort of degree making 50k a year tax free. Where else without a degree are you going to make that money? And I am only an E-5. Not only that but I have no school loans, and won't while I get my degree. Anyone who says the military doesn't pay alright probably isn't taking into account all the benefits that we get as well as base pay.
And I don't think most of the military members here who disagree with the repeal are arguing that gay's shouldnt serve, just that, for cohesion's sake, we just don't want to know. I think anyone who wants to and can serve should, but I do not want to know that they are gay, wether I have my own speculations or not.

I'm so tired of this GAY thing being forced into all aspects of my life...I don't care if you are gay, but don't display it publicly and don't force me to watch it. I have a son and I don't want to explain your gay ass behavior to him. That said, create a special gay unit, and send them in first. Infact, only arm them with slingshots, and make sure they wear rainbow colored outfits!

I think the repeal is incredibly stupid, but as per our orders, nothing will actively change. By the stupid talk we got, which was straight from the CMDT, you are not to go around acting all flamboyant. You are allowed in the military as a gay, that's it. You do not get the benefits of marriage. You can not be kicked out for being gay. Cut and dry, that was it. Does it bother me? A tad, when you consider berthing areas. In the end, for 90% of us, it will be just like Y2K, it will pass and no one will notice the change.

It hurts when you and your beliefs are no longer the status quo huh. Imagine all those who have been discriminated against throughout history and have fought for equal rights and protections - several of whom have become hero's for their cause - to see change occur so slowly.

Brian, you mentioned that they are allowed to serve but not have the benefits of marriage, etc. Give it a little time. After the first openly gay servicemember dies in wartime and receives the bronze star, silver star, or MOH and their "partner" is there crying at the gravesite and can't get a flag because they weren't married - public outrage will grow quick and there will be gay marriage and benefits throught the US.

There's even a growing counter-culture, if you will, of heterosexual couples that want a union versus a marriage since they don't recognize/follow a religion but want the benefits associated with it. There's at least 1 couple I suing for this.

Change will come quick and there's going to be a lot of people wondering what the hell happened. Unfortunately because of this I also see the rise of the white nationalists and a very real potential for outright violence by those who cannot handle change and yet feel they have the god given right to force others to do what they want.

Tolerance and understanding. There sure as hell aren't any atheists in foxholes and I sure as hell wouldnt be worried about a gay dood checking me out while we're under fire.

    LMAO- Welcome to 2011.
Don't lie to yourself or us- You are homophobic. If you didn't care-You would have no problem telling your son that those two people love each other and that is all there is to it. Insted you make a post full of hate and derision.
A vast population of gays don't go out in high heels and hot pants. They are very normal looking and acting people. You would never know unless you knew them personally. Same thing goes for the military-The lurid details have no place at work. And they shouldn't be forced to lie about who they are to make you happy.

But if you want to pretend that all gays are huge flaming personalities-Go ahead and keep your head in the sand.

My sister is lesbian, so I am very familiar with the lifestyle, and what a mess it is. She is now reaching her 40s and I think she is beginning to realize the error of her promiscuous lifestyle, and the price she has to pay for it. At least she is not sooo selfish as to adopt kids...don't get me started.

PS. Some people have sex with donkeys...I don't want to see that either!

I can't be in a more gay friendly state than CA...in the last election the people voted against gay marriage and the judges overruled the vote of the people....if just pisses me off to have this forced down my throat at every occation they get!

Again, I'm not against them serving in the military, just don't make it public spectacle.

My uncle is gay and has been in a relationship more stable than many normal happy hetro couples (Ahhhnold is a great example of a messed up "normal" marriage). There are all kinds of eff'd up ways people live their lives.
But there is a far cry of difference between knowing someone is gay and waching them do what they do. The flamboyant types annoy me too- Just like the folks who stand on street corners and tell me that I'm going to hell cause I don't have a subscription to their Bible or the politico types who won't associate with anyone who doesn't think like their do. But that's not a gay/straight issue- That's a personality issue.

I don't want to see anyone I work with doing or talking about their sex life. And if it does happen- There are disciplinary constructs for that...That will apply to everyone equally.

1965 Mississippi called - they want their beliefs on civil rights back.

Who the hell cares honestly. Australia integrated their military in the mid 90s and there were a lot of concerns about hazing and morale and in the end there were never really any issues.

native Americans served very capably in the military. There are no restrictions to enlisting. Same as blacks who once had to serve in seperate units.

Turns out there are probably a lot of talented, patriotic homesexuals out there who are capable infantrymen, doctors, engineers, translators and pilots and we are doing our country a great disservice by not allowing service.

What a man/woman does in His private life is the business of Him and his God. As long as that soldier does his job there should never be an issue

Who says all homosexuals are promiscuious? some live very monogamous lives, dress like mainstream in society. Chances are most people work and live around homesexuals and dont even know it.

On that note, I could turn on an episode of jersey shore where the guidos are trying to get 18 year old girls wasted and jam their tongues down their throats. Thats promiscuity that I dont particularly care for either. Promiscuity is a personal choice that has no relevance to whom a person is attracted to. I dont care for the lifestyle of a straight swinger couple any more than I care for the lifestyle of a flamboyantly gay man - but its not any of my business to tell anyone how to live their private life.

Personally, gays never bothered me.. I knew some quite open individuals before the DADT was repealed and it didn't really bother me then either.

And by the way kauai, I've been shot at, rocketed and mortared and never once found myself praying to any god.

    DON'T ASK = I won't ask and don't care
    DON'T TELL= Don't lie, I don't want to know, so just don't broadcast.

No lying necessary. Also no poster boys/girls. Again, it's all just opinion though. I agree that the system isn't broken, and nothing really will change. Lots of effort and IMO wasted energy, paperwork, and training.

And as far as I am tracking, an E5 SGT with 15 yrs in (point of separation for an E5), making 1k/month for BAH would STILL fall short of 50k a year...and that is BEFORE TAXES...would barely break 50k/year while deployed. Granted if you got a big family the "benefits" could save ya 10k/year in medical coverage. POSSIBLY.

Who gives a rat's ass. As a lot of people have posted we knew who was gay when we were in and who was not. Don't think the so called flamers are going to enlist in droves since it's been repealed. After being in the Navy and then 8 years in law enforcement you tend to develop a lot of tolerance for different lifestyles even if you don't agree with them.

By the way it's Memorial Day. Thanks to all those who gave their lives and the wounded both physical and mental. To those that are still serving and have served thank you again. God Bless and Bravo Zulu to you all.

So, because your sister is promiscuous then all homosexuals are? I'm sure theres no such thing as a promiscuous straight person.

There is NO logical reason that homosexuals should have any less rights than a heterosexual.

As an 18+ year veteran (straight I might add), I have absolutely no qualms with gays serving in the military. Over the years, I've known of several who were pretty obvious and I didn't see it affect unit cohesion in any way, shape or form. I've served ashore, I've served on ships and I've served in Afghanistan. If they can serve honorably, do their job, shoot straight and cover your back (no pun intended), then let them serve openly.
