A/C on with Defrost

not familiar with automotive A/C, but I think it would be either on or off. Don't really matter with this mod I guess, but to have partial cooling you would need some type of unloader, hot gas bypass or other componant. I would say the compressor is either on or off. Automotive is not my specialty, was just wondering.........

 

Okay finally got it! Dang it took longer to put that air strut back then to actually do the friggin mod itself!!!

 

Well, if you don't want to cool the air it wouldn't have to cycle on and off as much. If it's not kicking on as much then it's lower output mode, so to speak. Either way, it doesn't seem to lag the engine as much as when the button is pushed.

Like an air compressor. It doesn't have to run and fill the tank as often if you're using a nailer as it does for a sander. Maybe it's not really a "low power" mode, but it's also not running full out.

Oh, and wouldn't it be kinda counter productive to have the AC running full bore trying to cool the air when you have the heat on to dry the windshield?

 

is this really make a big difference for fuel mileage?

 

You actually put the shock back on? I found it a pain in day to day life, so it's now a prized addition to the "New Owner" box you give the next owner when you sell it.

 

I'm sure it affects it somehow, but not sure how much. You can feel that there's more load on the engine, but not quite the same amount as when you turn on the AC manually if that makes sense.

 

I had a Honda Civic that drove me crazy because the A/C would come on when the defrost was selected. It would burden the engine for a bit, and when you selected floor or panel, you had to turn the A/C off manually.

I read your mod CB and immediately went out and applied it to my '07 Tacoma. Quick and easy.

Haha nice! I was about to give up on it but I was like screw it! I'm going to get it no matter what!! It would have bugged the crap out of me if I didn't!

 

i played with my defrost tonight, even had the wife listen and i could not tell any difference....maybe i am just deaf and blind (not to see a change in RPMs). i switched between settings, played with it in different gears and saw no change in rpms nor heard any changes in the engine.....nor did i notice any lag when i accelerated down the highway while switching it on.

 

Yeah to tell you the truth, I never really noticed any change either before I did the mod but then again I didn't even think about the A/C kicking on with the defrost. But enough people says it does so I believe them so that's why I went ahead and just did the mod. Easy mod to do anyways so it all worked out!

 

Pre mod, I could always hear the compressor when I switched to DF at idle.

Post mod, I no longer hear it.

 

Hmmm. I might have to put it back to stock and try it to see if I hear the compressor turn on.

 

For anyone that wants to know for sure, look at the front of the compressor and see if the clutch kicks in and spins. Turn it off and on and you will see the difference. A helper is good to have, to run the controls for you while you are looking.

 

My 06 ijust have to push the ac button and it goes off.. i guess i'm good. i didn't relize that on my other o6 either

 

remember the light won't be on when you are in defrost mode, yet the A/C will still be on. Check like in my post above to see if the A/C is on or not.

 

Out of curiosity, has anyone done this mod on an '09 yet?

Completed the mod last night...stupid wire was a pain to get out. No doubt about a noticable difference with A/C coming on pre-mod and A/C not coming on post-mod. Checked it in the garage after modding it and on the road during an errand run, well pleased with the results!! I've been avoiding the defrost setting as much as possible after noticing the A/C turning on. Sooo glad to have found this mod.
