What did you do, break it off by over-tightening?

I honestly don't know. I may have done righty tighty instead of lefty lucie, anyway it looked buggered when I took it out and it didn't thread back in. The top of the breather was tight. I cleaned it up with PB Blaster and it spun - I blew into it and air passed through. I wrapped it with Teflon tape and put it back. BTW when I took it out I heard a air sound - don't know if it was blowing out or sucking in. I thought I should clean up the thread but don't have any idea what they are. Thanks.

how much room do you need to leave for the axle movement? when i did mine, i cut about 6 inches off, and still have 6-7 inches looped up near the spare tire. is this enough?

I didn't do my mod yet ... going to I soon as I got my part ...
But I already been into water a bit (wanted to try the truck haha) ... like just crossing some water puddle... max 2 feet deep( I guess ) ... but for not even 2 sec ... Do you think water have time to enter by the breather? If you just cross a water puddle even if it's like 3 feet at the deaper and less than 20 or 30 feet long total...

    Thanks

Depends how hot the gears/ oil was and how cold the water was... Inspect the oil in the diff ASAP. The water/ mud sucks in past the axle seals... and your axles are about a foot up, right?

The breather mod is so easy, even I could do it LOL! See the link below for everything needed...

So, is there a breather on the front diff?

I haven't seen anything about it.

Yes! That is what we do for the rear... use the parts on a front diff and add it to the rear.

Front breather and ADD breather, in engine compartment, behind battery.

Not completely sure I followed you there David.

So your saying the front diff already has its breather located in the engine compartment? Or is the breather for the front diff located (factory) on the housing itself like the rear?

^This. T-case and front diff breathers are the 2 in that pic, in the engine bay. This mod takes the vent off the top of the pumpkin in the rear and routes it up higher with the same hardware they used in the front from the factory.

    Thank you!

Makes you wonder, why Toyota (at least on the Off Road models) didn't take care of the rear like they did the front? If putting a breather above the water line was important enough for the front, then it would be at least (if not more) as important as doing the rear.:rolleyes:

Excellent. Thanks for the clarification guys!

That is strange they don't do the rear factory. I'm glad its not the other way around though. Getting to the front would not be near as easy.

Nice build man, I am curious about the blacked out tacoma emblem on the grill. How did you do that and where did you get the smoked out TRD stickers? Love those as well

Anyone know the torque to put on the rear diff breather or union? I had to go back to stock, apparently after 16K my rear diff fluid was dark.

Did the diff breather mod miles ago. The black (camry) union screws all the way in to the diff housing. I asked the question a while back but no one was able to give the the answer.

I don't want to strip the threads on the diff housing and that would be really bad. I upgraded the original diff oil to Amsoil today and the original oil came out black for some reason.

I decided it was probably safer to put the original breather back in and just roll with it that way.

I just need the torque specs so I don't mess anything up.

Everything was hooked up properly and the clamps were in place. Don't know the reason for the oil being dark.

Maybe someone else will chime in with a guess. Mine was kinda grey and smelly at 30,000 - the front and trans looked fine.
