Looking for a .22 pistol

So I've been looking for a .22 pistol and I think I like the Ruger MKlll 22/45. I've heard good things but they are a pain to disassemble and reassemble. I don't think that's too big of a deal so long as it's fairly reliable. Are there any things I should be aware of? Are there any other good pistols that compare? I've also looked at the Walther P22 and it seemed nice as well, I like the small size. If the local gunstore had a reliable revolver that's what I'd choose over anything.

Also this is probably a noob question (I just started getting into shooting) but do you have to be 21 to buy a .22lr pistol like you do other handguns?

 

They are very well respected and I would not hesitate to get one.
I do not have one at this time but I do have a Browning Buckmark and it shoots better than I can (it is not the heavy barrel target either just a 5.5" slabside.)

I have a P22 and a 22/45 and love them both. I like that the Walther operates more like a larger pistol, so if you handle other guns the slide operation and other controls feel natural. The Ruger feels great in the hand, and feels a little beefier. I don't think you could go wrong either way.
And yes, same purchasing rules regardless of the small caliber.

They're both right on the P22. The only complaint some folks have on the Walther frames, be it the P22 or the P99 is the ambidextrous magazine release is almost sensitive enough that you might accidentally drop your magazine in a self-defense draw (IIRC both walthers fire with the magazine removed)

I know that sounds stupid, but when it comes to self defense, murphys law.

 

I have the Ruger MK III stainless Hunter, Ruger Pre MkI (1956),Browning Camper and Dan Wesson 22lr. The Ruger is my favorite but the Browning is the easiest to change the barrel out on. I have a Red Dot on the Ruger.

 

I have a sig p226 lr and it was kind annoying to break in but now it's smooth and sweet. I like the 22/45 as well but there are a few features of the mkIII that I don't like. I'd get an mkII or an mkIII and then get a parts kit for it that will remove the magazine disconnect.

 

My stepdad has a Ruger and I really like shooting it. I think that's what I'd like to get however I'm only 18. What are the price differences between the Ruger and the Browning Buckmark?

 

ive had that little ruger pistol and it was alright i didnt shoot it much i couldnt stand the way it felt, if i was shooting match grade and stuff that would be different but it had a bull barrel and felt too heavy and bulky for just plinking random targets. overall it just didnt suit me. thats my .02 though

 

Also another reason I am leaning toward the Ruger is because they have been around for so long compared to others.

i have a ruger mkIII and i love it. although it does have a pretty heavy barrel and cleaning it is a complete bitch. so if i were you and i got that i wouldnt take it apart till at least a thousand or more rounds through it. a big plus with the ruger is the aftermarket parts available for it to make it a full on competition plinker

i usually shoot about 500 or so every week or 2 through it and just run a bore snake through it and use some Qtips to clean up what i can see. and if you take it apart you better have a few youtube videos and a hammer ready. prepare to be frustrated

i shot a p22 at the range the other day and it was really nice and if you were going to carry it i would say its a good choice or maybe a barreta tom cat i think its called

no experience with the buckmark. ive seen them and they look like cheap rugers but again ive never handled one.

cant go wrong with .22 though. great gun to learn and have fun with and you can get almost 600 .22LRs for about $16

edit: next time i take the ruger apart im going to delete the mag safety. its supposedly pretty simple if you just google it

I would consider the Ruger 22/45, prefer MkI or MkII over the MkIII.
I have two Rugers and a Buckmark and take the Buckmark to the range over the Rugers every time.
Factory trigger on the Buckmark is superior.
It has a better overall finish than the Ruger.
Buy what you like.

Great pistol IMO.
